You drive a landcruiser, you don't need studded tires. I live in Summit county and deal with snow and ice all winter and I never have a problem. As long as your tires aren't bald you should be fine.

I'd also avoid tires with big flat lugs - siping also helps on ice and packed snow.

well, that's nice to hear. One of our neighbors has a ford crewcab f150 4x4 and he switches tires in the winter to studded ones for icy roads, is that just because his vehicle is not awd (although he puts it in 4hi for winter conditions). I'm new to this so I just want to understand why he says get studded tires and you guys say don't. we'll be living between somerset and crested butte in case that matters.

Thanks,
T

I also have two sets of tires and rims. Mainly so that both sets last longer and I spend less money. When I bought my 80 it came with brand new Bridgestone blizzak tires I don't even notice when roads are icy. They have built in sipes and are made from a super soft cold-sensitive rubber, but i've run rocky trails in the winter and they crawl just as good as any all terrain and let me get home safely afterward. Ford trucks need all the help they can get, but a lot of it comes down to driving style. With an all wheel drive cruiser just go really light on the gas pedal, steady and slow on the brake, and don't crank the wheel to quickly and you will be fine. Studded tires are a waste of money and destroy your driveway. Find a frozen lake or parking lot and get some practice.

Good luck, and enjoy!

I was with you until then Ryan. Better be darn sure of that ice thickness, heard too many stories of people sinking their rigs. Underwater springs also currents in larger lakes can both create unknown rotten ice.

I got my tires siped at the tire shop, I like to think it makes a difference.

I think you could feasibly drive faster with more confidence with a studded tire. Just seems like the braking would be better. I don't know because I have never had studded tires, and I don't drive fast.

Iv'e been to crested butte this year,....ya you guys get some snow for sure! I had never seen soo much snow in my life. Honestly if I were going up and down those crazy roads and the aren't clean(crested butte has some big hills ad the mountain pass is intense) I would want studded tires for that part of the country
