The short axle shaft broke just inside the birfield. Everything else looks good.

Does anyone know how to get the short piece of axle shaft out of a birfield when it has the C clip still holding it in?

Put the axle in a piece of pipe, birfeild up, then drop the whole thing on the floor. The C clip will give up and the axle will fall through the pipe to the floor. Might take a couple whacks. :D

That will work if the axle shaft is not broke. When it breaks and you have a piece only a couple of inches long inside the birf, there is usually not enough weight to overcome the C-clip.

I am thinking I will need to weld a piece of pipe to the broken part of the the axle shaft to give some weight and then do the drop.

Can you cut off the axle shaft close to the star and then disassemble the birfield to get to the back side of the star? Not sure if that's possible - it's been a long time since I was into one.

I believe the birfields are the welded Longfield and I don't believe the balls come out of the welded syle Longfield.

I wasn't reading right, I thought the birfield broke.

Wow, don't hear of an axle breaking before a birfield very often. I guess those old longfields are pretty damn strong. I think you will definitely have to weld the chunk of axle back on and do the drop.

Luke came over tonight to help me get my parts cruiser out of the driveway and into the back yard and then we started working on the birfield. We welded a bolt the broken axle in the birfield and then welded the broken axle shaft to the bolt and tried the drop thing. The weld broke between birfield axle piece and the bolt. We then rewelded the bolt and tried again. No luck pulling the broken piece of axle out of the birfield. We decided we needed more weight so we welded an old long side axle shaft to the short side and did the drop thing a few more times and the broken axle piece came out.

Thanks for the help Luke!
