Off Road Solutions offers a full conversion Kit that includes the wiring harness and other misc parts to make the swap pretty painless, except on the wallet.

Yotatech has some good information on the swaps.

You're almost better off to buy the kit and spend the extra money up front. Chasing down all those little parts that you didn't realize you needed can get expensive fast. It also helps if you have the complete truck that the donor engine is coming out of. Do you have a 3.0 now? If so the swap should be pretty easy.

I don't have the 3.0 I have the 22re right now but that motor is not enough power to spin the 37 I have right now.

I was just looking on the ORS website the other day and I think they offer the kit for both the 3.0 and the 22RE motor vehicles. The main difference I believe is getting the trans and t-case sorted. The 3.0 bell housing, I believe, will bolt directly to the 3.4, but to bolt a 4cyl trans in you need to swap the bell housings or get a different trans.

Good luck finding a complete truck with that engine. Most of them got shredded in the Great Frame Debacle.

Which ones the 3.0 or 3.4? And because I am not too bright, to what are you referring?

I believe he is referring to the 3.4s. Anywhere in the north would be an issue. Down here in the sunny south we have no problems with frame rust. :D

Oh, I do remember reading some stuff on that problem.

Thanks for all the info guys. I will most likely start getting all the money and parts next year and will keep you all posted.

I rebuilt the 3.0 in my 4Runner.
when it was all said and done, rebuilding the motor, replacing a bunch of parts, replacing wiring harness and computer. It would have been about the same cost for me to have done a 3.4 swap and calling ORS to get their COMPLETE kit.

If you're going to do the 3.4, just get the ORS kit that includes everything you need and be done with it. You will spend alot of time doing footwork, getting parts, having parts guys pull different stuff off of their parts shelves so you can compare/contrast etc.

Yeah that's a good idea. I will do that. By brother is doing the swap right now he got lucky and found a donor truck. So I am keeping an eye out for one.

You will need to change some fuel lines since you are starting with a 4cyl truck. The motor mounts aren't in the same place as the v6 so there may be some firewall issues too. If your truck is a 5spd and you plan on keeping it that way you will need to find a donor engine/harness from a 5spd....also kind of difficult.

FYI. 95-98 T-100 donors would still have the correct right side drop transfer case you need for your truck.

Yeah that's what I am hoping to find is a t-100 but if not I know that the auto computer will work just throw a code and what not and I all ready have a 5 speed trans for it. So now I just need to find a truck if anyone In Nj know of a crashed truck or one that someone wants to get rid of dirt cheep let me know that would be great.

I put a 22RE in my 80 pickup that came from an auto 87 4Runner. I just left everything unplugged for the trans (like 5 connectors). The only thing I had to do was jump 2 pins in one of the wires for the neutral start switch. I think you'll be fine.

I'm certainly no expert on this, but things are more complicated with the 3.4L and the auto. The auto in the older trucks was a dumb hydraulic unit, no computer. Things changed with the newer trucks, and the slushbox got a lot more integrated into the engine controls.

I would do lots of homework on this to make sure what's required, but given that most Taco's and T100's were autos, this is likely what you will find for a donor.

It's true that they are more integrated. My donor truck had 2 or 3 separate transmission computers. I just left them all out and haven't had an issue. Not even a check engine light! I think even on the newer (like 90s) stuff there are no limp modes or anything for the trans. It will throw a code probably but not affect the engine in any way.

I'm no expert either BTW but I've seen lots of cars and trucks come through with jacked up transmissions and no affect on the engine. If the OP gets serious about the swap, there are plenty of write ups out there to read up on.

Yeah I will be doing this swap next year sometime. I am helping my brother with his swap right now. And again thanks for all the info
