blew up the 3.0 :whoops:in my 90 4runner 5spd and have a chance to get a very cheap 3.4 auto complete...

Ive done some research but have yet to find any specifics on what it takes as far as wiring goes. Im not afraid of the powersteering lines or the exhaust. I just want to know how hard it is to convert the wiring. my truck is complete and so is the truck Im getting the 3.4 out of, so if that helps.

who's done one?

any tips appreciated!!!...or links if you're better at searching then I am

Unless you plan on using the auto behind the 3.4 you are going to have to find an ecu and wiring harness from a manual 3.4 doner.

There is a bunch of reading on the subject, several good threads on Pirate, like this one: 5VZ-FE / 5VZE / 3.4L V6 Toyota Swap - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board A forum on Yotatech: 3.4 Swaps - YotaTech Forums

I haven't done one, but have watched. Several locals have and are happy with the result. My take is; it is easiest to swap the whole motor/trans/wiring from one rig, if mixing A/T & M/T parts it becomes more challenging. If you want to keep passenger drive shaft, the T100 is a good swap candidate, it also comes with the correct oil pan, etc.

This is the latest, a '90, 5 spd the donor was a T100, 5 spd, runs very well.

uggg...I was afraid of the auto to 5spd thing....

is the problem just the wiring for like the reverse lights the biggest issue OR will the motor think its revving to high when its a 5spd but has a auto ECU?

more and more its sounding like I just need to part this thing out and find the cheapest 96 I can get my hands on

thanks guys!

The motor will work, there are some options, without knowing the donor year/model they are just guesses:

It is likely that the easiest would be to convert your rig to auto, using the 3.4 trans. They are stout units and great for wheeling. The complexity of this depends on donor year/model and plan for the rig, SAS, stock IFS, etc.

If you want to use the 5spd, the problem is wiring. The harness and ECU differ between M/T & A/T. If a M/T trans is run with the A/T ECU, it will be looking for inputs (speed sensors, etc) shift outputs, etc, from the A/T trans that will not be there, so will not be happy. The "easy" way is to get a harness and ECU from a M/T rig that matches your motor. Depending on donor year/model it is sometimes possible to just get a compatible M/T ECU and repin the A/T harness to work.

Once you start mixing parts, it makes a relatively simple swap much more challenging.:frown:

That's my '90 that Kevin posted pics of and I echo his thoughts on the problems of mixing a 3.4L / Auto Trans ECU and wiring harness with your existing 5-speed. The auto ECU controls the shifting in the auto trans and will be looking for a speed sensor signal, which it won't find, and thinking there is something wrong, will go into a "limp" mode.

The problem is that the 3.4L/Auto ECU combo is very plentiful and easy to find while the 3.4L/Manual ECU is much tougher to find. I searched for almost a year through the Southern AZ Insurance Auction before I finally found one in my price range ($1000 for the entire T100 donor) on Craigslist!

Yes, you could just swap over the auto trans (then that brings up TC issues and driver's side drop problems from some donor vehicles), but if you absolutely want to use the auto ECU donor and keep your 5-speed, there is a wiring work-around like Kevin mentioned, but it involves repinning part of the auto harness and is complicated. Off Road Solutions used to modify your harness or sell you a modified harness expressly for this situation. They went out of business in 12/08, but there are rumors flying around the web that Mike is opening ORS back up and is taking orders through email. See Off Road Solution is back in business!!!! - YotaTech Forums You may want to try to contact him.

Also, http://www.toyonlyswaps.com/ will customize your harness for your specific application, but you need to send them both the entire recipient (3.0L) harness uncut and the entire donor (3.4L) harness uncut.

Hope this helps and good luck! It is a fun swap and well worth the effort! -Brian
