I have a header that has the 2-3 into 1 outlets. Has anyone ever done a dual exhaust system and not tie them both back together through a single system?

I am considering the cons - the extra pipe, muffler, and clearance issues. But belive the 55's length will make it easier to do.

I am planning on building a high performance 2F for my 55, with an emphasis on maximizing the most efficiency for fuel economy ( yeah right ) and thought the less restrictive exhaust may improve horsepower and ....................it should sound really cool:D.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Tim

Who made the header? Is it the MAF 3 into 1 x 2 headers or is it a custom setup? If it is the MAF headers, then you can get the 2 into 1 pipe morphing to a 2.5" tailpipe

Pipes lookie like this?

It's not the MAF, but similar in the fact that it takes 3- into 1. I am aware of the connecting tube, but was wondering if any gains would be had by a dual exhaust system. I am at work so no pict available ---yet.

BTW- Nice looking engine.

Yup. My rig had dual 3-into-1 and true dual 2" exhaust all the way back. Each pipe had two cherry bomb glasspack mufflers. It will sound like a 240z, or so. When I went back to stock to pass smog, I just used one of the two pipes.

Don't expect a lot of (any?) extra performance unless you change the cam, shave down the head for some extra compression and have JimC work his magic on your carb.

If you want to run dual exhaust for show that is fine, but it will not improve performance if you don't connect the 2 pipes as close as possible to the engine. You will have 2 pistons not getting the full benefits of the scavenging effect and this will affect performance. Scavenging exhaust to pull out the exhaust is the reason why people put in H pipes or X pipes in engines with separate piston banks.

I do also believe that too free-flowing an exhaust will diminish low-end torque.
For sound.....++++ for the performance as an offroad vehicle -------

Low-end grunt and gears gets it on the trail. IMHO;)

My true aim is maximizing performance, and your response is almost word for word what I was told this morning discussing this with someone who makes his living building high performance engines.

I picked my 74 up with hooker "Super Competition" headers running dual all the way back. Here is a quick pic where you can see the actual muffler layout but not all that clear. The second is just the tag on my headers.
