Is it just me or does it seem head gaskets blow early on these 3.0 toyotas?...I am considering getting a 4runner..But i have to be very careful when buying, miles etc...Any tips y'all?....Thank you...C

The factory gaskets were prone to premature failure, which is why there was a SSC (Special Service Campaign) by Toyota at one time, they would cover the cost to repair or engine replacement. I've owned 2 of those engines, and both were done for free by a dealer. Once replaced, they don't seem to have any more trouble. Before buying, get the VIN and have the local dealer check the Toyota database to see if they've ever been replaced. I'd be surprised if a dealer would still do the SSC work now, but ya never know. We had a '94 covered a few years ago, it had 150K on it at the time. Truck now has 250K on it, still going strong.

They still have trouble.
we're doing head gaskets for the 2nd and third time one some trucks/4runners.
Some were from idiots doing them the first time, some are from engine damage (electrolysis etc) some are possible due to stretched head bolts.
Others... well they just blow again.

Thank you guys,....I am getting a little scared about these 3.0's...but my price range is 4000..so i am limited...Reckon 22r or 22re is my best bet?

1: IF, you can find one...

2: It'll be fine, the 22R/E is 10x more what a 3.0 is, and it's a great motor IMO.

3: Just don't expect it to tow or have any power. The 4Runner weighs a LOT more than a PU... But it will get great MPG on the highway, and run forever with proper PM.

I'd get a V6 with a 5 speed if I could. If it doesnt need HG's then don't mess with it. If it does, get the best gaskets money can buy. And MAKE SURE the heads get done right at a machine shop.

10 4...Noted...How are these 2.7 4 banger 4runners...I am seeing a few around here...five speed?...And i am seeing a few(3.0) priced fairly low in need of HG...I love the comfort of the 4runner on the road...I may go that rout/...pay 2000 get HG done right...or pay 4000 and not know what ya gonna get...grrrr!....I was all excited about my 85 4x4...Gonna sell it i reckon..But i am a minimal off road guy.....Thank you for the input guys!!...Really helps.....C

Proper HG installation is critical, if done by an unqualified mechanic the chances of HG failure are high. The engine was designed for an HG no longer manufactured (asbestos) and was intended for Camrys in it's time. The installation of the factory replacement HG is particularly critical on head torque and block/head warp specifications.

Throwing them in trucks was in my opinion a marketing move, America wants em big engines :D. If they really spook you get a 22 equipped machine.

That engine slows you in the streets. We get short changed on low end torque crawling, however the engine is not what slows us down offroad. Nothing has been underpowered since the 1940's, we just like to drive too damn fast.

Any feedback on the 2.7L Motor guys??There are a few 4runners for sale with this engine...So i am comparing 3.0 to the 2.7L...Thanx..C

Yikes... You will have to go to the Tacoma style to get the 2.7... Or drop it in, custom.

I can't speak for that engine, but I can tell you I have parted out 3 Tacomas, and don't care for that front end...If you get it, expect a NUMB front end...No feel, and it will pogo over hard bumps...

They "say" it's heavier duty, but I can't see it. For off-road IFS, IMO it's DAMN HARD to beat the Torsion bar front...VERY HD!

If you're not an avid off roader, disregard what I said... Get (find) the 5 speed/ 2.7 for an awesome ride...

Also, don't know for sure... But if the frames were built the same as Tacomas, and possibly built at the same place...wouldnt that make them suseptible to the recall issues?

Well thank you gentlemen...But i found out i have a broken chain on my 85 that i was gonna sell to purchase a 4runner...and i am having nightmares on block sizes and chain sizes...I want to scream!:bang:
