Phil,
What size tires are you going to use when in 2WD?
What MPG do you get now?

Would going to P265/75R/16 (a tad larger tham stock but not as wide and a P rated tire ,less plys, rolls easier)
What MPG increase would just going P265 over LT 285?
Does a mud tread decrease MPG?

What would be the best MPG a 80 could get?
Landtoy,

I believe Phil has a highly modified 80 w/ SC and 35's, maybe 37's...re-geared etc. etc.

Tires are 37 that dont hit :flipoff2:with 4.88 and Garth is right it does have a SC.
Just checked MPG 11.5 for normal running around town better on the Hwy.
I wagged gas savings at about $300 +/- annually with a 2MPG increase. But I think the real savings is on the mechanical side(see first post).

Some talk about a front driveline disconnect If someone comes up one I'm available for beta testing. :)

Thanks for all the input

Phil

I am mostly interested in this for the purpose of running 80 series Long's. Any one else see this as a PRO? my rig is not my DD anymore so i am planning on going to Longs any ways as i wont be putting TONS of highway miles on. but the 3 or 4 times a year i drive 150-200 plus miles to wheel i could go 2 wheel drive.

The only wear and tear that I can see you may save is on the birfields. The wear avoided on the front diff and ujoints is just coming back as additional wear to the rear diff and ujoints. Worst case hypothetical scenario - the additional wear on the rear diff results in the need for a rebuild that would otherwise never have been needed.

How much do you think you are going to save in maintenance $?

To really reduce wear & tear in a meaningful way remove the big tires and supercharger and go back to 4.10s. But what fun would that be? ;)

Yeah, but don't tell me you weren't wishing for an auto on VooDoo at CMCC the other year. :flipoff2: :D

You get a real spare tire yet?
Yea sometimes I wish I had an auto, but that is alright I like the manual gearbox better; its cooler I think :D Anyway I have grown a third foot so im chilling! Can use all 3 pedals at the same time.

I did get a real spare this time; I got over that Venezuelan tradition of carrying a cheap 9.00x16 military tire! Last year when I got my new tires I got all 5 the same.

Are you going to be wheeling your truck this year at CMCC?

Had a converted awd 80 to 2wd/4wd and economy wont make a noticable change, handling will change slightly, and rear wear will be accelerated voiding any saving on front wear....

But in 2wd with the rear ARB locker in you can do muuuuuuuuch better circle work :D :flipoff2:

Alright apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

I love that tag line. I just saw that flick the other night and that's the best line.

Rear wear will be accelerated, but it doesn't logically follow that savings is voided. Wear won't be twice as fast (Mean Time Between Failure analysis don't work that way).

Plus, I think adding wear to the rear birf is better than wear on the front birf! ;)

I thank everyone for the feedback a lot of good points were made.

Bottom line I purchased the hubs they are going on. Don’t know for sure how much disconnecting and connecting will be going on but I see two plus’s that make the cost worth it.
Don’t need to deal with a broken bird if/when it happens.
The fun of slide the ass end around

Phil

Thanks, please let us know whether you used/needed a spacer. I don't see a real good answer yet on that, in this forum.

Don't know where I saw it but...
For people that tow their vehicles behind their RV, there is/was aquick disconnect drive shaft kit so the RVer wouldn't destroy the tranny of their vehicle. Don't know if it would work on the 80 front drive shaft.

As for diff wear, I replaced the front diff bearings at 200,000 mi and there was no wear on the bearings of gears.
I have the rear bearing and will rebuild it this summer for the fun of it.
