Hello all. Working on a 1991 FJ80L-GNPNEA. It is bone stock aside from OME suspension, ARB bumpers, and the Nomad valve body. It has a 3FE engine and an A440 transmission.

I’ve been hunting for the bell housing Toyota made to Bolt the 2UZ to the A440 transmission (PN 35111-60110) and finally found it. My question is….

I’m sure someone has done this swap so a few questions:

Does the 2UZ engine clear the firewall when bolted to the stock transmission stock location? Looking under the hood of my truck, the 3FE engine recesses back into the firewall. Referencing photos I found from eBay. It looks like the back of the 2UZ motor is in plane with the back of the valve covers. I don’t want to have to bash my firewall for clearance. See attached photos.

Will the A440 torque converter bolt to the 2UZ flex plate?

BTW, not interested in an LS swap. I am also happy with the A440 transmission. If this bolts up, I plan on retrofitting the 3FE throttle body (if needed) and getting standalone engine management, probably Haltech for a relatively simple V8 install.

If you haven’t found this yet it’s going to help you greatly…. While most of it is based on the FZJ. There is a link to another thread I think that will have the info your seeking

Your going to need engine mounts and trans cross member the 1fz and 3fe are set to the driver side a good bit. The UZ has to come forward about 5- 51/2 inches and shift passenger a little bit.

These are very good and what I used for my truck. Very well made and puts the UZ right where you want it

Tell me if I’m missing something. When you move the whole drivetrain forward I immediately think of:

- Transfer case lever. Is there a simple solution for this?

- Motor mounts. I’ve seen those Toyonly mounts and plan on using them once I decide on which path I’m taking.

- Drive shafts. I can’t imagine there’s an OEM solution here. I’d assume local driveline shop.

- Trans cross member. Is this something people are typically fabbing up as they go? Or is there a solution similar to the motor mounts from Toyonly.

My fab skills are mediocre at best.

Your in luck you have the desired tcase lever for most all swaps LS included. an fj80 lever is what lines up well for most of us (though most of us with a UZ swap are using A343F out of 100 series ). Both shifter rods will need to have their length adjusted prolly similar amount you move forward the rods will have to be shortened.

Yes Toyonly also has trans mount but requires a little welding. I think this is about the only off the shelf trans mount available right now.

Drive shafts, once your in place Tom Woods drive shafts will fix you up. Local might work as well depending on where you are

Read though the whole thread above there’s lots of trial and error stuff that works and didn’t work in there Like throttle cable or pedal to use depending on your donor engine year, exhaust manifolds, fuel pumps and delivery systems, Intake and MAF sensors solutions, wiring and ECU set ups, (Tim @ Lexusv8engines is an amazing resource and can get you going mostly plug and play. ). Rad and heater hoses that get you where you need to be. The list is long

This is a big project and your going to learn a lot you don’t necessarily have to “fab” a lot of stuff but you do have to problem solve a lot stuff, learn a lot of new skills it sounds like.
