"I used to have a link to a Jeep site where a guy installed switches onto his trans solenoids, then he could lock it into 1st or 2nd. The cherokee XJ has a 1-2 selector position rather than 1 and 2, so this was his solution to get around it."
I wonder if there is a way to do something similar. Or even trick the ECT into smoothing out where in the power band the shift from 1->2 happens. In my work, I sometimes spend entire days in low range so I'm hoping there is something to be done. Thanks all.

I'm pretty sure there's a way to prevent the trans from using the "low range" shift program, and to use the high range shift program always, even while in low range gearing. I swear I've seen it done on here, but I can't link you to the answer unfortunately.

Unplug the low-range sensor at the transfer case. This was the original mod that allowed complete control of the CDL (with a CDL switch installed) in high and low range, prior to the 'pin-7' mod. Of course, you will need that CDL switch if you want to do this and have 4wd.

Thanks for that tip! Maybe I'll run a switch to the cab on the low-range sensor to choose which shift pattern to use. Luckily, I already have a CDL switch. Thanks for all the input, folks.

Now, if I can only find that low-range sensor...
Search for 'high range shift points' and related terms like 'CDL switch' and you may be able to narrow it down by looking for posts by @Tools R Us. You may even find he's provided some pics. Or perhaps he'll drop by.
