Hello,

I have an 3 Door Prado (1990) with a 2LTE, it is heating up like crazy and it is bitten by the "Cracked Head" bug, some people have suggested that I swap it for a 5VZFE.

1. How easy is the swap
2. Can I put in the 4 Runner Transmission and will the 4x4 System on the Prado be fine with the new transmission

Troubled in Toronto

I don't think anyone has done this swap in North America yet, so you're going to have to do some careful research.

I have seen a number of Russian LJ7x's that have had the 5VZ swapped in. They all love it.

The 4runner and landcruiser transfercases are different. So either you need to get the landcruiser transmission/tcase to work with the 5vz, or get the landcruiser tcase swapped to the 4runner transmission.

And then there will be the wiring etc.

Go here scroll down a bit, use google translate and browse for the 5vz 70 series prados. Many of the owners have written about the swaps. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 70-series. Opinions of the real owners on DRIVE2

Hello,

90 Series Land Cruisers came with the 5VZ-FE engine, particularly the VZJ95. They had both manual and automatic transmissions, usually with a full time 4WD drive train.

It might be possible to source a complete engine/transmission/transfer from a VZJ95 for the swap, complete with the ECU harness.

The 90 series t-case won't work for the 70 series. The 70 series Prado actually uses the heavy duty landcruiser 70 split case. And the rear axle is the offset style. The 90 series has the t-case for the centered rear axle.

Hello,

Too bad. I had not noticed that detail about the rear axle.

Back to finding a transmission/transfer case to mate to a 5VZ-FE engine.

Why not go with the 1uz? There is an inexpensive transmission adapter and they are a great engine with tons of availability. More HP to boot. Plus there are several who have done them in the states. If nothing else you can find swap threads in English.

Do you have a manual or auto transmission? If manual, you should be able to get a 3VZ bellhousing and the 5VZ will bolt right up. The block bolt pattern between the two V6’s is the same, but the input shaft on the Prado is the shorter version, the same as was used in the 3.0 4Runners through 1995. You would just have to source a manual 5VZ so that the wiring harness didn’t have the controls for an automatic transmission.

I think AirheadNut has hit the nail on the head; go with the manual transmission if possible.

Hi, I am looking for guidance. I have a LJ78 with a 2L-TE engine with a 151F manual. The engine is not doing well. I thought of replacing it with a 1KZ-TE because I've read that this engine fits perfectly, works well with the existing trans. I've read that the 1KZ-TE also has head issues, so....I've been looking at 1KD-FTV engines. Will it fit nicely in the LJ78 engine bay, mounts? Will it fit a 151F? Please share your experience. Thank you in advance

That would be an ultimate swap, but I think the electrical is quite complicated. You could go talk to dieseltoys. Make sure your pockets are stuffed with green paper!

What I can tell you is the 1KZ and 1KD blocks are apparently very similar or even the same. So what bolts to one should bolt to the other.

I wanted to make sure it fits before I start looking for one of these engines in Japan and in the UK....there is an intercooler on top...just want to make sure it fits within the compartment....Yes, I know, I will need to make a cutout on the hood for it to breath, and install some type of fin. This engine was used on many toyota's, including the hilux/tacoma/vigo pickup trucks, a very popular vehicle globally.
