Hey guys, just got a question, does anyone know on a 2F motor when timing the distributor, at TDC where the rotor should be facing exactly?...Should it be facing #1 dead on or just before? I'm not sure which position the gear should be in. I just bought the FJ60 last week and the distributor has been installed in the wrong position.

this is from the 2F engine manual. When properly done, the rotor should be aligned with the #1 cylinder post on the distributor cap. I don't think there are so many gears that "just before" or "just after" matters. Once installed you can turn the distributor body to set the timing right on. If it's on the wrong tooth, then the distributor body won't turn enough because the advance diaphragms get in the way.

make sure the #1 cylinder is TDC ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE when doing this procedure.

The distributor will only go in 2 ways. If it is wrong, it will only install 180 degrees opposite from what it is installed now.

let me know if this is incorrect.

there are maybe 15 or 20 teeth on the distributor gear. So there are that may ways the distributor can be installed. Only one or maybe two are correct enough such that the timing can be properly set.

this is only true if the oil pump shaft is in the correct clocking and the engine has not been turned after removal of dizzy. HTH

That is what I was thinking.

Got a question. Pardon my rambling way of asking it.... So if the oil pump shaft is clocked correctly, can the dizzy be installed with the gear being off one or two teeth? And if so, what does this do to the timing light and how things read? Can you be off say 2 teeth and the timing light still give you a reading at 7 BTDC, but it really isn't?

You can install the dizzy with the rotor pointing in any direction you want...as long as you also clock the dizzy body and move the plug wires around appropriately. The engine does not care as long as the rotor hits the plug wires at the right time.

Hold down on an HEI is a piece of crap. It is tricky to get it to hold. It is basically clamping the dizzy in place. As opposed to the OEM with the hole in the body of the housing.

Thanks for the splainin' Makes sense. I'm getting lots of spark knock at 7-9 or so. Just wondered if the gear placement would change it. And yes I am running 91 with no ethanol
