My 2F is leaking oil from almost every conceivable place to the point that it requires a quart of oil every week. It has 238k on it and is in my '83 FJ60 that I daily drive. Should I perform a full overhaul with a rebuild, desmog, sniper EFI, etc., or should I opt for a swap of some sort? If it gets swapped, I want something a bit crazy because I am also going to put Dana 60s, 40s, and a load of armor at the same time that I do this swap/rebuild. Any thoughts? I'm open to any ideas at all, anything from an R2.8 Cummins to a 632 BBC or just a rebuild and overhaul. Thank y'all for any advice/thoughts/ideas.

How deep are your pockets? Fixing most leaks and replacing coolant hoses can be done without even removing the engine for a couple hundred bucks.
A Sniper setup adds at least $1500 to that if you source everything yourself. Any issues with the engine will be worse with the Sniper, so you really need to go through everything first and make sure it’s in good order.

Dana 60’s, 40’s, supporting mods to make those work, a BBC, etc….. You’re looking at $20k minimum if you can do everything yourself. Assuming you don’t have these parts already laying around.

Then there’s the question: what do you primarily use the 60 for?

If you’ve owned it long enough, you know living in Denver you have to emission test. If it’s not de-smogged, you better keep it that way. Rebuilding the engine is a good idea
I have my air pump purging my exhaust right in front of my cat because none of my equipment works anyway. I've passed all of my tests this way.

I'm willing to invest a substantial amount of money in it. It is my daily/off-road rig, but I never really get it above 50 MPH. My current ground clearance is just a bit lacking for what I take it on, hence the want for 40s. I am thinking sniper because I drive up and down from the mountains weekly, and I have heard that they do really well with extreme altitude changes. If you have any other ideas, I would love to know! The end goal for my 60 is for it to be an absolute unit that can do just about anything.

Love this question, I want to know as well. Currently I have nearly everything removed except for the engine, and I am kind of curious if I should just remove the engine too while I am acting stupid.

I am desmogged, and legally driving it in Utah, so thats a plus. Regular carb though, so no sniper.
