Hi everyone i have the opportunity to buy a 2b diesel engine to replace the chevy 350 in my 72 fj40. The 2b supposedly has either a rod or main bearing problem. I have a few questions.
First can you turbo a 2b?
This is my dd so would this engine be a good engine?
What kind of mpgs can these get?
Can you make good power out of them?
How hard and expensive would this be to fix and rebuild?
What is this engine worth in this condition?
And what are your opinions on this?

Hi all,

The first response that comes to my mind is "why would anyone pull a 5.7L V-8 to replace it with a 3.0L I-4!?!"

O.K., with that done, the 2B was only installed in Land Cruisers sold in Japan. Other markets got the B and 3B engines. So parts for the 2B will be very hard to source. I have no idea whether a turbo kit intended for a 3B can be fitted to a 2B.

Why are you interested in the 2B? Are you seeking better fuel mileage? A diesel engine to power with vegie oil?

Regards,

Alan

Yah I've just been thinking about eventually going diesel for the fuel mileage. Also the idea of having something different from the normal small block fj40.

I have a 2b in one of my trucks. Its seen some use and it shows a bit. Smokes a ton on the highway and in the mountains. Gearing is going to be important as it is a low power engine. That said it goes on and on with a single tank of fuel. I's say it comes down to if your willing to sacrifice an easy to drive truck for one that takes some planning to get up to speed. Highway use- not a good choice.

Turbo- not a great choice. The 3b has piston squirters. Guys here even complain about the 3b claiming that head cooling is too much of an issue.

I'd say once you look at the effort and expense required to rebuild it including a pump rebuild- and then to install it and re-gear.....

I have the 2B in mine as well. Can't speak for the turbo, but it does get great gas mileage. There isn't a lot of power as Pete mentioned, so gearing would be important. I'm sure you could source parts from Japan if you had a source, but I have found it difficult to do. That's part of the fun for me though.

I have found one place online in Australia that sells a 2B rebuild kit.

The 2B has the same power and torque specs as the 3B and feels a bit zippier to the 3B i have but it has a h41 and the 3b has the h55 so as others have said gearing is key.

I have only driven it local but my point is at the same specs as the 3B and being 3.2 v 3.4L I really don't see much difference and plenty of people road trip 3Bs.

What you have to keep in mind is none of them are really interstate friendly.

Not sure where u are but if you are in socal u are welcome to come drive it.

From memory @Brackenridgecruiser had a 2b in his bj44 and drove it a fair bit long haul.

I have a 1979 B engine and lets just say speed is not its friend. Nor is acceleration. Its happy up to 80kph but after that the wind noise/ engine noise takes over. It will happily do 100kph and i have even had it up to 120kph down hill with a tail wind. Its like a little tractor at low speed and seems to climb its way through most obsticals but struggles in sand. Seems to go forever on a tank of fuel though

Th 2B is way better than a B series that is foe sure. I had a BJ40 many years ago and driving it and my BJ42 you were left under no doubt that the 3B was a way nicer engine.

2B Is a nice vintage engine, having in mind 80kph.
Toyota produced it for Japan market until 08.1982 (worldwide 3B from 08.1980) - and usually Toyota keeps the best for local market.
I would not think about upgrade from 2B to 3B - too much work vs the same kph.

B to 2B upgrade

If you want more speed go to 13bt

Or 3FE (not diesel)

Or 15bfte (the most powerfull from Toyota B diesel family)

Or use the trailer (as an Economist I like the most)
