295 75r16 vs. 285 75r16

UZ, those Coopers look killer on that sweet gunmetal 100 of yours. I'll check 'em out......have run many a set of BFGs over the years and have been pleased...but I don't do the serious stuff that many of you run...just little ol' Texas rocks, sand, mud and cactus......last flat was in a buddy's CJ7 with Wranglers...ya'll won't believe this...I wouldn't if I hadn't seen it....but a huge rattlesnake struck the sidewall and aired that tire out.......

ColoradoCarlisle (or anyone else who drives in the mountains a lot), I'm considering going to 285s from stock size, but am concerned about degraded performance in the mountains. can anyone comment on how much performance will be affected by going from 265 to 285? Will i still be able to power over the Divide or will i notice the changed gear/tire ratio?

You will need to drop into 3rd and 2nd on steeper climbs. You WILL notice the difference on freeway entrance ramp climbs, etc...a little less efficiency due to the shift points in the tranny being off for the larger tire circumference. You just adjust your driving style to match. And your MPG will go down a little. Based upon running 285's for 14-months.

I can power over the divide with 35's.

Seriously...I could tell VERY little difference when I went to 285's. Very little. I noticed the drop at 315's but it still climbs the grades and passes well. (And my trucks loaded)

I'd not be concerned about 285 or 295.

Thanks to all you Cruisernistas for the assistance. I went to the tire store last night and told them to fill 'er up with 285s. They said "No way, Dude, they'll rub big time", so I said, "Bite Me...the IH8MUD Boys say they'll work....put 'em on!" And they ride & look great.............

I have had that exact conversation about 4 times with tires folks in NC. They have no clue about what will fit on a 100 series.

I hardly notice the difference caused by the 285s but I'm a fairly conservative driver.

Thoughts on whether pushing in the ECT button will change the shift points back close to stock while running the 33s?

I don't think I will be able to tell the power loss coming off of a tired 3.0V6 4Runner so I ordered some 285 BFG's - the 122R Snowflake versions - finally after months of research.
