I finally have a shop to put my cruiser in. I have a 292 straight six chevy, turbo 400 and NP205 t-case for it. Ive had these for a long time but am now to the point I can start working on it. The last one I did (1965 FJ45 P/U) I built completely stock. This one won't be. Just starting to look for info. I am looking for motor and tranny mounts. I realize I may have to fabricate but any info would be appreciated.

I don't think AA even makes the 262 (292 ??) motor mounts anymore. TH400 very long, very over-kill, won't have much of a rear drive shaft if you use it. Am I wrong, or will you need a centered rear differential in order to use the 205 transfer-case??? Some have tried to side-drive, doesn't work very well at highway speeds.

The motor mount kits you can buy for the SBC should cross over to the 292. The big difference is that the 292 mounts on the block are not directly opposite each other. Instead they are offset so that they are not equidistant from the front of the frame.

There used to be a bolt onto the frame SBC motor mount available, but the name of the person building them escapes me now.

The first time I read through the original post I missed the part about the TC being a 205. Yes, the 205 is a centered rear output, which makes for problems with the cruisers rear axle.

Thanks Don. That's good news about the mounts, easy availability. As for the axles, I have an AAM 11-1/2 rear for it. I may reconsider and go with a gm 14 bolt haven't gotten that far yet. I appreciate the info. I know I will have some fabricating to do

5.0 tbi with a later model hei, on that 292 would be sweet, great motor you can lug them down lots of torque down low,

if it was me i would think of a manual trans not only for the length but for the ability to use more of the low end torque..

The TH400 is overkill but I want to try it. I love manuals but I've had a number of back surgeries so shifting can get painful if I've been seated for a while. Anyway, I know I will run into problems. I have the AAM axle which has the center diff. but its massive. I still may go with a GM 14 bolt. Hopefully I can get the engine in the frame rails and then go from there. Thanks for all your inputs, I'm sure I'll have more questions.

dont worry about the drive train length, people put 4l80e,700r4 and nv4500's into fj40's all the time and they are well documented on here.

sounds like a fun swap.

But they usually put those long transmissions in behind chevy V8s, which are shorter than an inline 6 and allow them to shift the whole drivetrain forward. He wont have that advantage with the 292.

But the 250/292 is smaller (in length) than the 2F.
But the TH400 is way longer than a H42.
But the engine is being custom mounted so it can be shifter forward a couple inches, especially if the radiator is moved forward an inch or two.
And the rear axle is custom, might as well mount it a few inches farther back.

It's doable in an FJ40. But ultimately it's gonna be thirsty and slow, just like stock. If I was that set on an auto tranny, it would be a latemodel 4.8/5.3 with it's matching 4L80. Good power & efficiency, modern overdrive tranny.

Whatever you decide, please post how you solved the fitment issues. The 6cyl auto is a rare combo.

I once made a "one on earth" adapter for 2F to GM automatic, used a 700R4 (which is about 2" longer than a TH350), installed into an FJ45, still had short drive shaft. I believe in an FJ40 there would have been about 4" of tube between two u-joints, with no slip yoke. I believe that adapter is now in someones Landcruiser wall art museum.

Thanks for the encouragement. Once I have them engine in I will have a better idea of what I can get away with

His last post in this thread was over ten years ago. Also has not logged on Mud in over three years. Wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a response.

Search his post and you will find in January 2022 he had a new thread with a single post showing pictures of his progress.
