Can you run 255 85 R16s on non USA 16 inch split rims? I've got a lead to purchase a set of 16 inch split rims in excellent to new condition local to me. The rims are to my knowledge are factory width, i.e. 5.5" wide. Obviously the width wouldn't be an issue if I had a rim company like Stockton widen them to say ~8".

Does anyone have experience using the 5.5 width rim with this tire? In particular what size tires do you Aussies out there use on your split rims? Some 33 9.5s would be in order but these dont exist anymore in 16" or never did in this diameter, who knows.

I've tried to find the answer to this but there are no real good answers to my questions. Kynot62 claims you shouldn't use tires with a section width 4" over the rim width. https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/463307-tire-size.html. 255 85R16s are only 1/2 an inch wider than this 4 inch measure. This measure seems arbitrary though.

Of course a broader internet search turns up more opinions and we know what opinions are like. I do like a good argument though....

Thanks!

I've been looking at that tire size lately. Looked them up on Summit. For a BFG mud terrain it says minimum rim width is 6.5"

Are you sure 5.5" is the width? IIRC my stock FJ60 wheels (15" diameter) are 6.5" wide. Why would the 16" be narrower?

Yeah, the stock 16" split rim width is 5.5" unless they have been widened. The more posts I read about this rim, it seems 235 85 R16s are the way to go but I still want to know peoples' experiences. One advantage of the 235 size is that there are many more makes and models of tires available.

I have pics of a 40 with that size tire that i really like. That is the size I am probably going to put on the splits i have.
There is also a chat thread about a saudi club where a dude is running those , or maybe 75's??, on a 45 as well. Have to find the thread..

I purchased the rims today (thanks Peter!). I'll post pics tomorrow when I get them on the vehicle. The rims came with 7.50R16 bias (8ply rears and 10 ply fronts) tires in decent shape. I'm gonna try to run those for a while. They might be a little bit too stiff for the roads of the Northeast though we do have some potholes that could eat a Yugo. I'm gonna have to find the tools to be able to do the field fix on these.

Them 7.50 16's are wicked.
Got a set myself.

Very nice rims and a full floater too. Lucky Devil. How do you use your rig with these tires? I'm a little concerned about ride quality. I'm currently about 90% highway and 10% gravel and offroad.

Nick....tell me what you are looking for in tire irons. I am in the tire supply business and just ship them too you.

There are lock ring bars for this application since they are used a lot in big equipment.

I actually have been thinking about getting a set of splits myself.

Lots of pics of the combo here:

The tire was used extensivley on 1 ton domestic pickups that have 6.5" wide rims. Yes that's different than the 5.5" splits. Lots of guys run the wider 33x10.5 on the stock 40 series 15x5.5 rims. You decide if the crowned tread patch is a concern to you :meh:

Before and then after shots below.

Honestly they ride better than the radials (BFG TA 32 11.5 R15s) that were on there. The track straighter, are quieter on the highway and help with the potholes on my street.

I'm still concerned with the safety of the tires as they are quite old and I dont know the condition of the tubes yet. I'm gonna take them apart sooner rather than later.

And yes, I'm gonna get the hubcaps.

I would be interested in a set of irons myself.
If you have a picture of them, please post it up.

I am interested. I'll send you a pm with my phone number so we can talk about this.

I have run 750r16 and 255/85/16 and 235/85/16.

the 750r16 last forever and give reasonable grip in all conditions.I run at 48 psi on the road but have a good load in the car at all times.the ride is a little harsh but not bad.I have aired down to 18psi for mud and sand and had good traction with no problems.
235 and 255 I really can't tell any difference between the two. Purely due to tread pattern these perform better offroad than the 750r's but not enough to worry about if you are doing easy to moderate offroad work.
When I change wheels/tyres I do it for tread pattern far more than tyre size.

I'd like to see your 7.50R16s along with make and model. Where did you get them? I was looking at tirerack.com for 7.50R16s. They only had two types and one was a steering tire. I'd like a decent all terrain.

Right now I've got 40 psi in all four tires. We'll see how this works long term.

They came with the rims. Two were like new, two slightly worn.
They are from south america.
Couldn't find anything in US similar.

Your truck looks great with them by the way.
