I just bought an 85 4Runner, and it came with an LC Engineering timing chain kit that the previous owner never got around to installing. I had to do a few things before it was streetable so I went ahead and started the timing chain. The cover has some decent grooves cut in it, but they don't go through to the water jacket. Should this be replaced or is it ok?

Did you find all the plastic chain guide pcs in your oilpan? My 94 had around 190k on it when the head gasket went. I had no wear at all but the guide was all busted up and stuck to my intake screen. If you didn't already and you have time, drop your pan and check it out.

i dont know if i would use it....whats the deal with the GIANT crack along the top surface where the front of the head mounts to? in the right side of the pic?

looks like the flange for the hidden front bolt is broken off/ missing.
that thing will leak like a funnel!

plus with the side already worn down like that, when the new one starts to wear out, you wont hear it rub the timing cover until its waaayy bad. i would just replace it imo.

if you put it on there, and it leaks, you just wasted a lot of money cause you have to buy a new head gasket, head bolts, various intake gaskets, deal with the friggin oil pan, etc...all of that work is worth $150 of my time to me.....just sayin

I see what your talking about, but it's not a crack. It's just 27 years worth of oil/grease/dirt that looks like a crack in the picture.

Didn't pull the head, and I don't know any of the history on this 187k mile motor. Instead of sinking time and money into it, I'm just doing the chain and going to let it go. It's not a DD, and ran fine before I tore it down. I'll work on slowly rebuilding a fresh motor to swap in it eventually.

I think that thing that looks like a crack is the casting line in the aluminum. I could be wrong.

Crowley, the new timing chain kit has the metal guides right? I think with proper install and the metal guides that chain will never hit that hsg again and you shouldn't have a problem.
