I am looking for ideas at troubleshooting what is causing my motor to quickly "sputter" when I'm holding the throttle between 2-3k rpm. It quickly surges, then comes right back up in rpm's..It has been consistently doing this for while now and I don't have a clue what could be the cause of it...

Could be pinging due to timing. If your timing is right, I'm not sure. If your engine has a knock, the knock sensor is supposed to indicate to the ECU and the ECU retards timing (I think) to save the engine. I'm new to this forum, so I don't know what you may have started with or already been through.

Motor pings like a mofo under load in 100+ degree weather on 89 octane fuel...I replaced the upper o2 sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc. No codes from the ECU, so I'm thinking the lower o2 sensor may be ok.

I'm thinking about filling up on 91 octane next time I'm at the pump...I was doing some reading and someone was talking about also going with a 180 T-Stat? Not sure if that would help or not...I may have to also invest in a timing light and make sure the timing is good like you said.

Definitely borrow or buy a timing light and check your ignition timing. You know you need a jumper in the diag box too. I can't remember the terminals offhand though. It is in the Haynes or FSM.

I know about the jumper to check the codes but to check the timing, I need to jump it too?

5 degrees before tdc. i believe it is the mark right before tdc on your oil pump. check it to make sure. also a little light colored paint or fingernail polish if you have a lady in the house will make the timing mark on the pulley easier to see.

OK, that's it. New rule. Everyone in this section needs to have a sig line with the year and model of truck they're talking about, including the engine. So we don't have to try to remember. My 50-YO memory just can't keep them all straight.

I need a RAM upgrade.

digital, have you checked the TPS?

x2 i had a 22re that was doing all kinds of weird stuff the check engine light never came on and there were no codes, eventually it came on and was the tps. but start simple a Manuel with trouble shooting guide would be nice. look at the guide to all the problems and many times you can find the problem rather quickly.

i have a similar issue with mine:
at about 1800 rpms under load and light acc only my truck will buck hard, throwing you back in your seat, then smooth out a bit and go through the rest of the powerband with no problem. i have no codes and have replaced the tps and adjusted both the old and the new as best i can. not trying to hijack just thinking our problems may be the same.

i have a very recently remaned 22re from davez
