Hello all,

I got a 89 4runner with the 22re engine. It slowly developed a pretty bad knock when idling and when slightly fethering the gas that seems to be coming from the top end somewhere. The knock goes away when the engine is under load. I recently (about 6k miles ago) had the head off to replace the timing chain and guides. The engine's got about 155 k miles on it. When I had the head off I noticed a bit of wear on the valves stems and also some wear on the injector rubber molding (not the o-ring but the rubber molding on the injector).

Anyboby got any suggestions? Could the worn injectors be the problem?

Thanks in advance

Oh and the knock was there (less developed) before I took it apart. It was pretty minor and dismissed it as noisy lifters.

Drop the pan, and look at the rod bearings....you will likely find your 'knock'...

Good luck!

Thanks for the help. Went down to the local japanese engine guru with the truck.

He was pretty sure it was the worn lifters. Sounds like it might be smart to pull the motor and replace the wear parts or just convert to a diesel. Hmmmm
