Ok, the skinny ...... I have a rough idle problem Im trying to hunt down on my 85 4runner. It has 210k on chassis and previous owner SAID it was rebuilt at 170k. Now with that out their I did a compression test this weekend and and here is what I got;1-->170 psi2-->150 psi3-->150 psi4-->155 psiNow the only thing that was odd was the number 1 cylinder pumped up smooth all the way to 170 then peaked. With the other 3 cylinders it took a few rotations to start pumping up then went to their pressures. I repaeted them two or three times to verify and thats what happened. Could my cam, valves be bad or does it sound like a valve adjustment? I dont hear any ticking at any rpm so I just over looked adjusting valves. and yes I already looked for obvious ; vacuum leaks, egr sticking, TPS out of adjustment, checked IAC for being dirty all are good. It pulls good through all the gears just idles rough. Plus I adjusted timing and played with the idle air screw. If I idle it up its better but still rough.

One other odd thing is when I put my hand next to exhaust pipe is it will suck my hand up to it while its running. Not sure if anyone has had that happen at all either.

I don't see anything alarming in those numbers, but I always say that a compression test will only tell you that something MIGHT be wrong, whereas a leakdown test will tell you WHAT is wrong. I would do a valve adjustment, then do a leakdown test.

What he said.
Compression looks good.

Also when I do leak down test can I do two cylinders? Or can I do number 1 cylinder and then number 3 ...... spin crank 180 degrees then do cylinders two and four ??????

FINALLY !!!!!!! Found low rough idle problem. It ended up being valve adjustment. I guess who ever rebuilt motor set them wrong . They were set ALL past 0 on lash. Went back adjusted to .012 on exhaust n .008 on on intake and BAM all good!!!!!!

The guy i bought my truck from used to be a Toyota tech at a dealership in Colorado back in the early 90s, he did a ton of valve adjustments on 22re's. I call him the "valve whisperer", he has these nifty SnapOn tools that are specifically for setting the tappets on these engines. I get them close, then take it to him, he works his magic, and BAM it runs smooth as can be. No tapping or missing.
