85 mini truck w/ 5" lift. Has anyone tried or used this setup ? pos. /neg. results.Stock gears currently have me in 2nd gear on highway way too much. or lugging along @ 55/60 mph. or are 5.29's too low?

5.29s are really nice with 33s. I ran them with my 5 speed truck and still got 19-20 mpg highway. I could actually use 5th gear! The truck crawled pretty good as well. I've had 5.29s in my '94 for about 7 years and run 33s and 35s on it.

We had a 4runner auto with 4.88s, and it could have been lower. The automatics usually have 4.56 gears from the factory, so your 5.29s should be perfect!

Another way to look at it is: If you choose 4.88s and decide to run 35s someday you will not be low enough, but 5.29s work good with anything 33" or bigger. I'd rather be a little bit low geared than a little bit high geared as a general rule, especially with a 22re.

Consequently, I am setting up 5.29 gears in my '86 pickup this afternoon! It will be running 34" swampers and some worn out 33" wildcats on occasion.

You must choose... but choose wisely!

Here's a pic of my '94 running 5.29s and 35"procomps. 19-20 mpg highway!

+1.
Totally agree.
I have had good results with 5.29 Yukon Gear.

I'm going to go with 488s in my 85 4runner with 33s.That seems like the best ratio. My friend put 529s in his with the 5 speed and it was way too low geared. He loved it off road but didn't go far on the highway. He regreted putting in the 529s. with 33s.

Thanks , I was leaning towards 4.88s , but wanted some input from you guys as to the benifits / comprimises of 5.29s .
Also having the automatic, gear ratio is much more critical.
So gearing a tad low should reduce the truck constantly downshifting to 2nd gear on the highway.
I did have 35s in the future plans for this truck so 5.29s it is.
Thanks for the input ,sometimes hearing what others have tried helps save $$. Don't want to do it twice .
Thanks again ,
Mike

5.29:1 Gears (Trail Gear), 37x13.50x15 tires On 86 4RNR, Auto Tranny, 22RE With An Aussie Locker In The Rear.

Works And Drives Fine, Maybe About 3-5 mph over On The Speedo.

Just Wish I Had Lower Gearing In The T-case For Those Steep Obsitcals Offroad.
