Has anyone had problems here with the thrust bearings in there 22r or re engine. The shaft has to much walk in it .I suspect that the thurst washers have fallen out. I have read that this in not uncommon.Do you know if you can an aftermartket washer that will take care of this problem,if the shaft and cap are still in good shape? This is an almost new engine . I have also read that you can get these washers in .073 and .090 .I think that mine has .073. Thanks

I've never heard of them falling out..... There would have to be a big problem I'd say..... How much end play do you have? What vehicle is this in? The crank has to come out to change the upper set, but the lowers could be changed from below...... Probably not good to only change the one side.....

Ummm, I just changed all my bearings from below. I had my front axle out and figured I'd freshen up the bottom end and dropped the oil pan. I was able to change my upper thrust bearings by pushing one end up and around the crank with a pipecleaner. It's not easy, but it took me under 2 hours to swap all my bearings once the pan was off.

As for having one fall out???? No idea how that could have happened. Also never heard there were two sizes. Any time I've ordered bearings or rebuild kits, I just get sent whatever ones they have sent, they never ask for a size. Is it a difference between early or late 22 series engines?

Maybe it's different on yours.... But my dad's 84 22R the thrust bearings have a tab that goes on the block side of the bearing retainer to keep them from turning.... But once the crank is installed they do not come out.... At least I think it went on the block side... Here's a pic of what I'm talking about:

yeah, looks just like mine. The two pictured without tabs are for the top, and the ones with tabs fit into the 3rd main bearing cap. So, the two without tabs can be pushed on one side and rotated around the crank. Being very, very careful of course not to nick or scratch the crank surface, just really need to push at one end until it starts to slide around the crank. Also, gotta make sure to keep pushing/pulling the piece in a circle along the crank, not down and away from the crank, basically spin the bearing 180 deg. until it falls of the bottom of the crank.

Did you install a "high performance" clutch? (Pressure plate) Higher clamping pressure can cause accelerated thrust washer wear.

So what's the verdict Georgeharry? Had a chance to pull the oilpan yet? Not sure exactly what vehicle this is on, but I'm stumped as to how a thrust bearing could possibly fall out without the bearing cap being removed or left off. Where did you read that this is not uncommon? I've never heard anything like this, and I spend tons of time reading/looking at truck porn.
