Just got back into the toyota game with a 84 pickup that has some goodies on it. Just picked it up and went to change the oil to make sure it was changed and check out if anything was in the engine. When it came time the old oil filter was a fram ph8 looked like one off of a V8. Got a correct filter and was twice as small. Finished the oil change and the guage was reading between the two lines on the guage (good oil pressure) now it is on or below the bottom line and at idle is close to the bottom. No knocks oil is right in the middle perfect runs great just wondering if there was a reason that bigger filter was on there and should go back or just not worry about. Good to be back in the yota family.

I used valvoline 10w 30. It is a cheap puralator oil filter was reading that a cheapo will cause a decrease in oil pressure? Should I go back to a toyota. Will it hurt the engine to run on that bottom line, is that to little of pressure.

the only reason to use a larger filter like that is to have more oil availible. I do the same. but i have never noticeed a differnce in pressure betwix the 2 sizes of filters.

this is the gauge set i use. it is reliable, and practical. i trust em more than the factory gauges.

toyota only require 4 lbs of oil pressure at idle as long as it comes up too normal as soon as you touch the gas you are fine.

It's not just Toyota's.
Most people are completely without a clue when it comes to oil and oil pressure.
First, it's FLOW the lubricates, not pressure.
Second, regarding pressure, almost every vehicle in the known universe is designed for 10spi/1000 rpm. At idle the engine isn't producing hardly any power and needs almost no pressure to produce it's required flow.
Third, everyone should use a 0Wxxx oil and make sure it's changed as required.

89 22RE says 4.3 psi at idle, and 36-71 psi at 3000 rpm.

Here's a story, or something..... My 4Runner had an idiot light when I got it... At start up, the engine would knock a little and then the sound would go away, the idiot light would stay on till about the same time the sound stopped... The light stayed off while the engine was running...

Then I installed new rod and main bearings and the noise and light didn't last as long at start up...

So acording to the idiot light everythign was fine after start up....

Then I swapped in an SR5 gauge set and at idle the needle barely registers, and at 3000 rpms it will never get over the halfway mark.... So.... it seems to me that the SR5 gauge set isn't the most accurate thing in the truck.

End of story...
