I was under the belief that toyota switched fully to the 22RE in 88, no Rs were produced withouth the E after that... But I was wrong, or am being lied to by the VIN.

Pulled it up through Oriellys VIN decoder,
4/91 Toyota 2wd 1/2 ton 5spd 22r w/o efi

WTF? The world isnt going to stop turning or anything but I was just extremely suprised!

Some one edumacate me please!

This is only true in the 4WD models. They still put them in the 2WD trucks.

Although Toyota started selling EFI's in late 1984, they continued to make the carbureted trucks up until 1992.

That explains alot, he said it still got 32mpg after 300,xxx on the odo.

2wd carb trucks were mostly 4speeds anyway. so that will contribute to the (IMO) kinda poor MPG.

just about every 2wd carb I see is 4speed.

but really the rpm drop from 4th to 5th is only 250rpm, so, I'd really like to kick Mr. T in the teeth for that.
