I can find a bunch of timing chain replacement threads but no headgasket changes. I am changing the head on an 85 truck because it had a spark plug hole that was totally destroyed and was unable to be heli-coiled. I can find pdfs online of the fsm but I can't download it because for some reason my browser freezes whenever I try.

So I bought a manual but now I have a more serious problem. I can't time it because the engine will not turn over because a piston is hitting the head. I thought you could turn a 22r over no matter what the position of the valves were in. I also tried turning it over while moving the cam with another wrench but still no go. I tried every position but the engine only turns 1/4-1/3 turns before hitting. The engine in this truck was rebuilt before my friend got it and I am wondering if it is an earlier block that was put in. The head that I am installing was suppose to have been on a carb'd 22r out of a 2wd around 1988 and the truck is a carb'd 85.

The 22R is an interference engine, which means if you turn it over without a timing chain on to move the valves out of the way at the right time it will hit them.... If you are really clever you could do it with some help or really slowly....

Are you trying to set the timing chain timing?

If the head/block are mismatched, then you may be stuck.....

Have you tried setting the cam (with the gear on) to the 11:45ish position? and then see how much you can turn it?

it's my truck. is there any way to identify the year of the block? i researched the head compatibility of the head i bought and the year of my truck which would make them compatible if the block is original. if it came from another year, there is the possibility of the head and block not being compatible.

how can i identify the year of my block?

It's been a few years since I did the same thing to my '85 engine. fire$tone tire creatures did a preventative check on the truck and cross threaded my #1 spark plug.

I have the '85 FSM for the 22r/e engine. It does not state anything about positioning the engine/cylinders prior to installing the head.
Here are the readers digest version of the steps.

1. apply sealer to the cylendar block
2. install cylinder head
(a) align the alignment marks placed on sprocket and chain during removal
(b) position cylinder head over dowels on block
3. install rocker are assembly
(a) place rocker assembly over dowels on head
(b) install and tighten head bolts (three passes) 58 ft-lb.
4. install chain cover bolt (9 ft-lb)
5. install cam sprocket on cam shaft
(a) turn cam to position alignment dowel at the top
(b) while holding cam sprocket and chain, turn crank until #1 and #4 cylinders are at TDC
(c) place sprocket over end of cam dowel
6. install dizzy .....

From step 5 it sounds as thought the pistons aren't supposed to hit the valves.
:frown:

What if you backed off the head bolts to release the tension on the rocker assembly? This wild release all the valves and allow you to position the crank.
And then rotate the cam to TDC before re-tightening the head bolts.

It has a rebuilt engine but I wonder if the old engine was destroyed so they just found a 22r to rebuild and it wasn't an 85 block.
