Hey fellas I'm new to board and wanted to say hello and also to find some info on an engine swap for a 89 toyota 4x4 extra cab. The current engine has some oil burning issues and the replacement has none with way lower mileage and a full service history. i have never done a swap before and was wondering if any of you guys could give me some tips. Thanks, Matt

uhh. well 1st, welcome....

2nd. Have you ever swapped motors before?

3. Where are you? You could be local to some more help you know....(edit. pot call'n kettle  )

4. You paid more for a motor, when all you needed was a head job, and oil seals...

5. I'd do a timing chain regardless...but that's just me. Do all the seals while it's out.

6. Go to the sticky's, read them, go to the bottom and find a FSM and DL it for free.

7. There are a few ways to remove that engine. One is with the wiring harness, one is w/o. I do it w/o pulling the harness to, but you may find the other easier, IDK.

Hilux,

I'm located in northern BC, the current motor is burning oil and seems to have some bottom end noise. the new motor is 400 bucks and runs good with a new timing chain. so i figure what the hell may as well learn something and have some fun doing. worst comes to worst i have to walk to work. ha ha. the new motor has a wiring harness and a few other parts as well. this is ford and chev country so not too many guys want toyota parts.

ok. now we're getting something...

sweet. You got lucky there. Can you trust, or have you seen that in fact, it does have a new TC in it?

yep. aint nothing to it but to do it.

forget about that. Unless all of Canada has the same exact harness, we in the states had a few choices. So instead of getting it all the way in and figuring out its missing that one little thing. Just make sure you put the new motor in with all the sensors the old one had, you use the harness that's in the truck now, and you won't have any compatibility problems.

So, in other words. You're the only guy in those parts with some sense. :flipoff2:
