I'm heading up to the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument for Labor Day weekend. I've planned several routes to take depending on weather, road conditions, and gas mileage as I go. Shortest route around 180 miles, longest around 250 miles.

Let me know if you are interested in going along for part or all of the trip. Plan is to leave Kaibab Pipe Springs gas station on Friday morning, and hit St George, Utah on Monday. Everything in between is subject to change depending on how the trip is going.

20 years ago I did this and hiked down to the river. Amazing area, but climbing gear definitely required to hike to the river. There is an old mine site down there, but can’t remember the name.

Well, come along on the trip and we'll try to find out ;)

For those that go on this trek in an 80, take 10-15 gallons of extra fuel on that loop. I’ve done that area four times in the past 15 years, twice in the 80 and twice in the Power Wagon. Each time I didn’t come out with much extra left over…

I am considering this as well, never been in that area. Not sure if I can make it work with school starting around that time though.

We had a similar experience where your avatar pic was taken. We thought we had enough fuel, but we were running on fumes by the time we got back to pavement. Always bring more fuel than you think you'll need.

Gas mileage is my primary concern for this trip and is why I've planned out so many routes. I'd really like to see the Grand Gulch mine before it gets more vandalized, but not at the risk of running out of gas. I'm taking two jerry cans, and if I can maintain 10 MPG I've got a range of 290 miles.

My intention is to hit Tuweep townsite, Nampaweap, and Mt Logan trailhead on day 1, then cruise down to Whitmore Canyon for day 2. After coming back north to the Mt Trumbull schoolhouse I will know if it is safe to drive to the mine &/or Twin Point overlook or head back to the Mt Trumbull area for the rest of the weekend. Gas, weather, & road conditions will make that decision for me. Better to make it to St George with a quarter tank than to run out of gas fifty miles south of a gas station.

I'll be calling the park rangers the week before the trip to check on road conditions, fire restrictions, and possible closed roads to limit "surprises".

I’m thinking about it. Some moving parts at work to figure out.

Im considering this. it is an awesome area,

I'm heading out of Kaibab Friday morning just because I can.

Anybody that can't travel down until Saturday can meet me around the Nampaweap & Mt Logan area on Saturday and then we can drive down to Whitmore Canyon for the night.

Coming back early is always an option too, as the shortest route up to St George is north from the Mt Trumbull schoolhouse.

The key for me on this trip is ultimate flexibility as God always laughs at my plans, and in this area I don't want to PO the big guy :skull:

If anyone wants to come on this trip please let me know by Wednesday afternoon and whether you will meet up with me on Friday morning or Saturday morning.

I'll be calling the park rangers Monday to check on current conditions.

I just talked to the park rangers and they said that we shouldn’t have any problems with the roads next weekend. They have had some rain so there will be a little mud, but nothing that should be a problem for Land Cruisers or a lifted Taco 🌮 if we aren’t reckless and are willing to turn around.

Roads to Nampaweap, the schoolhouse, Whitmore Canyon, Grand Gulch Mine, and north to St George are all in pretty good condition.

Please let me know by Wednesday afternoon if you want to go :steer: on the trip.

As much as I would like to go, it's just not going to work this time. Have a safe trip and looking forward to seeing pictures!

I'm considering this too.
Great! I sent you a PM just now with some details.

I'm packed and will leave from work and head North tomorrow. I'll wait Friday and/or Saturday for anyone that lets me know they will be coming before I get out of cell phone range.

We'll catch you another time - sorry it didn't work out this trip.

Started out by visiting Pipe Springs National Monument on Friday morning and filling up at the local Chevron station.
