It’s nice to have in the rain as well.
Absolutely. When you have to accelerate quickly in the rain, full time 4WD does it without any drama.

It will be interesting for sure, I dont see the 4Runner staying as large as it currently is with the 250 in the mix now. Leaving the Sequoia as the only “rugged” 3 row option would drive customers to seek other options and would be a miss by Toyota. I suppose they could roll the 4Runner out with only a 3 row configuration to differentiate it more from the 250.

My guess is that the 4R ends up being the same thing as the LC250 with 3 rows and overlaps in price. 4R goes from $45-60k. LC250 is $55-65. And my other guess is that 4Runner again kills the Land Cruiser because - who's going to pay $10k more for the same thing? Especially if the 4R has 3 rows, KDSS(?), fox or OME bypass shocks, and a non-hybrid model with full cargo volume and probably more payload and towing capacity.

The rugged NA petrol option for the Prado is a 2.7L outputting something like 120HP. The true successor to the R and RZ engines you used ot have in 4R and Tacoma in the US.
Do you really want that? I think everyone would be complaining if Toyota was proposing that in the US.

People even complain that there is too much plastic in the interior...
Toyota tried that with the 5th gen 4Runner. They discontinued it after MY 2010. But there are some 2.7 MY 2010 4Runners out there. They only offered them in 2wd with a 4 speed AT. If you never needed to go fast, I think the 2.7 would be perfectly fine. It's just not powerful enough for highway speeds. Otherwise, with the 8AT it should be good for lots of places.

I don't think reliability is life or death anymore though. Not very many places in the world are as remote as they once were. Most of Africa has cell service or common radio use. And with starlink and even the iPhone 14 or higher - if you can afford a new LC, you can also afford a satellite connection for emergencies. Breaking down being life or death isn't really a thing anymore except for very very few situations. I think the 2.7 is mostly just a way to offer a low cost option - both to buy and to own long term, not really a reliability improvement choice.

reading up on the bronco forums, they seem to have a positive reaction to the LC250, maybe even more so than this forum.

This thing is going to sell.
Of course they do. This vehicle is great, all things considered. Everything from the TNGA platform is great, all things considered

If you look at the FB groups it's a bunch of negativity as well. A bunch of stupid jokes about how the world is pretty much over because the Land Cruiser doesn't have a lift gate. As if we haven't been seeing those jokes since the release date of the 300.

At least here on Mud people can articulate their irrational complaints.

I have been waiting patiently for a hybrid and that was my main disappointment with the GX550 release. Instant torque from standstill, silent enjoyment of nature on the trail, not being an a****** when I‘m doing nighttime photography and driving through a campground at midnight.
It's only a mild hybrid, basically a big starter motor installed between the engine and transmission that can give some kicks. No driving only on electrical.

I think
One way they can attact 200 owners who don't want to switch to a 250
Is release a triple locked over trail LX600
I seem to recall reading or hearing some places that it might happen.
It'll cost alot of money though. Alot.

My guess is that, given its price point, the 250 will cannibalize the 4runner more than the reverse. Where 4runner will be marketed to the hopped up off-roader bros to compete with Jeep and Bronco, the 250 offers a more reserved and still capable alternative for grown ups, one better suited to both touring and daily life.

I don't recall Toyota ever offering a locker on an IFS axle?
My gut tells me you’re right. I cannot think of an example of one.

Edit - apparently the 300 does. It is forever the unicorn.

Well I for one am stoked for this. I have been waiting patiently for a hybrid and that was my main disappointment with the GX550 release. Instant torque from standstill, silent enjoyment of nature on the trail, not being an a****** when I‘m doing nighttime photography and driving through a campground at midnight. Plus the range boon of 27 mpg combined. I‘d love to see what that turns into real-world with an LRA tank. I have only driven a 200 series a few times, but this new one seems more like what I want/need from a Land Cruiser than the 200 did.
I ultimately shied away from the LC or GX460 I was planning on because I couldn’t stomach the fuel costs; the day after the GX550 release I ended up picking up a ‘24 Outback Wilderness while I wait for production and had 12000km on it in the first 6 weeks. The 4Runner has never been interesting to me so whether I sell the Outback for the LC or GX next spring is going to be the question, and if a hybrid GX isn‘t announced by then, LC it is.
Lol wonderful. Landcruiser is cross shopped with Subaru. We have arrived.

This thing is going to sell.

Dont hold your breath

Devils in the details and the fact that its ONLY offered as a hyp-brid is going to alienate a lot of people

That alone distinguishes it from the 4R and who will and will not be a customer

I'm not aware of but I never got my hand on a 300 either so maybe 🤷‍♂️
Mega Cruiser has a front locker too. Kind of hard to buy that though.

It’s is going to sell like crazy worldwide. I have to assume the next gen 4Runner will no longer be built in Tahara to allow for more capacity and some justification in higher price of very similar vehicles.
