Here is what I really like about these FTE H15x combos. The FTE once stripped down of its EGR, restrictive intake, restrictive exhaust system add 20-25psi of boost, +30% more fuel and a good intercooler; the result is an extremely drivable diesel. Pulls great from low rpms, by 1200-1400rpms you are on full boost with these GTurbos. The red wheel also holds boost and full power to redline from my experience. That means you can pull from 800-1200rpms in a gear without shiftting (or lugging it down) all the way up to 3-4k rpms. Turns your 5spd into a halfway automatic trans. 2nd for example is 15-30mph, 3rd is 20-40/45mph, 4th is 35-65mph and 5th is just for highway cruising in my opinion. So yes around town you are rowing gears but not bad and like I say good speed variations through each gear. Yes you can start in 2nd with our tire/gear combo but I don’t because it lugs the engine a little, this is an H152. I also don’t skip 1st in say an NV4500 and v8 combo when I drive them, sure you can but I prefer pulling 1st off the line. Even if it is for 100ft. Drive an old HJ47 with a 2H and granny first H41, you pull 1st for maybe 150ft but you always pull it. Or try an old Chevy with the SM465, same kind of thing. It is a truck and so pulling 1st to me is part or it and keeps it “truck” feeling to drive. You want easy driving do the 750 5spd auto behind the FTE is my opinion.
Another nice thing is they (FTEs) are the least smokiest of all the Toyota diesels we have worked on. Vastly different than say a 1HDT or old 1HZ. I could actually follow one on the trail vs the others being a bit,
Cheers
