Hello,

This is the the official 2017 Rubithon Thursday Breakfast Morning thread. It would be nice to get to know each other a little better before joining up on the trail. This is a good place to ask questions, and get answers.

This will be a traditional Loon entrance to the main Rubicon Trail on July 13th. This unique run has a pre paid private breakfast at the Ice House Resort before we start the trail. The breakfast is scheduled to start at 0800. We ask that we all get there early as in 0700 so that we can do the the tech inspections and insurance paperwork early and be able to hit the road right after breakfast.

There are a few "motel room" cabins at the resort, some RV spots and a tent camping area. The rooms are way rustic but "OK".

I usually fuel up at fresh pond before the turnoff to ice house road. Topping off at ice house is not a bad idea (be prepared to spend $10 a gallon). I will pack a jerry can just in case, though driving straight through and exiting at Tahoma I have never run out of fuel.

Our first day's destination will be Buck Island Lake. Friday we will continue on to Rubicon Springs where folks will typically scatter and find a camp spot, Sunday everyone mostly exits up Cadillac Hill, there is a local 4x4 club that provides assistance.

The Rubithon signup page will list mandatory safety and recovery gear that you will need, as well as equipment requirements. If you're running the minimum of 33's and a 2.5" lift, You should have serious armor and a strong passenger to stack rocks.

We will be using 2m Ham for our communications, most likely 146.400. I recommend obtaining a license. I have Baofeng hand held, they are inexpensive. I have a file (chirp) that can be uploaded to the radio which I can share ahead of time. It is very easy if you have a sync cable.

My name is Doug, I will be helping Pete get you all through the trail. It looks like we have a nice variety of rigs this year. I will be traveling without a passenger this year. I have driven this trail at least a dozen times in a mini truck and in my 80 series. The 80 I will be driving is setup in a pretty typical fashion with 3" of lift, 35" tires, 4.88 difs., front and rear lockers, all the requisite armor, dents, winch, snorkel, fridge, tools. I do carry specific parts for an 80 series such as a steering box, birfield and all the parts to repair a knuckle/studs (minus the actual knuckle). If you are driving an 80 and have not reinforced your front swaybar axle bracket, I will encourage you to remove it to prevent catastrophic failure resulting in broken front brake lines (plus the front will articulate better). I will also walk around camp and offer a wrench so that everyone can check their knuckle studs after each day on the trail. I am really looking forward to this years Rubithon. I expect the trail to be a bit different thanks to all the snow we have had. Even though we have postponed the date and the melt is in full swing, I would think extended axle breathers, motor air intakes and dizzy waterproofing might be something to pay attention to this year.

Hey Doug,
This is Brian Barrington. Looking forward to hanging out again this year! I'll be bringing my 79 Toyota Mini. It will be me, Jenn her daughter Jackie and my daughter Brooklyn. We are going to be spending the night in cabin 5 at Icehouse Resort on Wednesday night. I'll have my cell phone with me at 530-368-6991 if anything comes up. Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting out on the trail.

Im not sure, if I will be heading up Wednesday Night or early Thursday. Since I'm solo this year I should be traveling a little lighter and sleeping in the wagon. Looking forward to seeing you again. Any new parts on your truck? or is it finally "completed" (like that ever happens lol).

Hi all! I'm new to the trail and looking to hitch a ride with someone! I'm fully registered and have my air ambulance insurance. My LC 100 isn't quite up for the trail, and anyway before i'd drive I'd like to have a look at the trail. I have my Technician class Ham license and a walky talky. We used to head up that way when I was a kid cause my dad loved fishing the Rubicon River, and I used to love seeing the big Jeeps go by up to the trail - always wished he'd trade the 2WD Studebaker for something 4WD.

Nope no major modifications other than a new transmission. Last year I was driving around in 2nd gear with the dual cases because first gear was bad in the tranny I installed at the last minute. Having the super low first gear this year should be a good improvement. I still need to finish a few thing but overall the old mini truck should do okay. It's not pretty but it gets the job done and fun doing it. :)

We went to Mud N Yer eye a month or so back and had a great time running around Hollister Hills. Those are some STEEP hills out there! I was sure the drive shaft was going to snap! :)

Hey Jim,
I wish I had room for ya in the Mini Truck but we have a full house. Keep asking around though. There are lots of people with empty seats and I'm sure they would appreciate someone to help spot them through the rocks!

Finally chiming in, Pete here, I've been out of town for work but I am now in full Rubithon mode. Glad to see so many familiar names on the list again this year. With only 9 rigs and many with experience we should be able to have a drama free run.

The only thing I will add to Doug's itinerary is that we will be back to the traditional camp spot at Buck Island this year. My experiment last year was a bit of a fail. With luck we can get the spot past the creek and to the left rather than in the trees before the creek.

My rig is unchanged, 89 4Runner on 33's, at least I got new tires this year. I'll be traveling with my three boys, Chris, my son, and Ryan and Evan. In fact we are getting together today to add a few leaves to the rear spring packs so we are not on the bump stops like last year. We need one of the boys to get a rig and a license so we are not so overloaded!

We will be at Ice House Resort Wednesday afternoon, probably camping in their back camp area.

Looking forward to seeing you all there,

Pete, Chris, Ryan and Evan.

huh?
did it back itself out? threads look "ok" at first..
once i zoomed in I saw what you mean.
dang dood, that'll be tough to HeliCoil right down to the opening.
did you just locktite it and make it home?

Starting to feel like when you approach the front of the line for that big Roller Coaster. It's the point where people you've chatted with in the queue are getting buckled into the coaster car. A little nervous, a ton of things going through my mind at a bajillion mph, and just a couple days before we drive up through Tahoe - like the clicking of the coaster car as it approaches zenith before descending into mayhem.

I'll be driving a 68 Fj40 that hasn't seen the 'con since my Dad drove it through in '81, when I was about 11. In fact, he'll be my copilot. The truck still su/sbc but now sporting 33's on OME's with air lockers and an NV4500, with but a little armor. We definitely do more expedition style runs through Nevada than crawling.

We'll be coming in Thursday morning for breakfast.

I'm a HAM too, AF7GR and look forward to chatting it up on the trail. Are we using a group specific frequency?

One thing to note, my Dad (76 years young) just had knee surgery last month, so the in/out of the vehicle is still difficult for him and I'll try and minimize that if possible (and borrow your rock-stacker :).

Can't believe it's almost here, so excited.

Paul
