2017 Colorado Landcruiser's San Juan Trip! UPDATED INFO

When: August 24-29, 2017. Meet at Penrose Shell Station at US 50 and CO 115 at 9 am to travel over Monarch Pass and down 550 to the camping area. Otherwise meet down there.

Where: San Juans Mountains, camping is just north of Silverton, CO down South Mineral Creek (FSR 585). We stay at the Golden Horn dispersed camping area (GPS 37.8127, -107.7438), back in the far corner from the entrance. There is plenty of room for campers and trailers. Cost is free! And there is a pit toilet!

Trails: whatever we choose to do! There are lots to choose from. But we like to make it so everyone at all skill levels can participate.

Additional info: Ham Frequency: 146.460, Tracy (KE0CHN) and several from the club will be monitoring. Also CB channel 4 (channel 14 alternate) will be monitored. If you can't make it down on Thursday, but plan on Friday or even Saturday, use these methods to link up, so you can find the group!

I'm in. I'm planning on coming down on the 24th and hauling my travel trailer #glamping and will be staying through Labor Day. I'll be moving to Ridgeway State Park on Friday to meet-up with family for the weekend. I'm up for most any trail but want to do Poughkipsee for sure. Haven't done that one in a while.

Keep an eye on the trail report. I heard engineer from silverton could be out for the season because of a crack that formed.

Absolutely! Beautiful trip. I had a rough time with a rental breaking down on CR30 Cinnamon pass but it was all still very fun. Worth a 3200 mile round trip.

I'm down for meeting some cruiser folks here in Colorado! I have a newly built 100 and would like to join you Kyle. I'm new to trail work on 4 wheels but have done many on a KTM. If you're okay with a hundo joining you I'm in. Let me know and I'll drive over there.

FYI. Just read this on Bushducks.com. It's not Engineer, but Mineral Creek that has issues.

That is correct. We were able to ride the entire loop. I have no prior experience with the loop but did not find it to be that rough. Just a few rocks in the switchbacks on engineer that made it fun. If they meant rough as in bone jarring road I would agree with that regarding Cinnamon Pass. It was so bumpy that the jeeps rear end wanted to get loose. We had to go slowww.

Was also told that Mineral Creek has priority so Imogene may not be plowed this season. The rock slide on mineral was too big for the bulldozer so it must be serious.

Hey guys...I'm up in the air at this point about me making this trip. It will mostly be if I'm cleared by the doctor to start driving yet. I may need to have somebody take the lead, and if I can go, then great! I know there are several people talking about going, so does anybody want to help out with leading the trip?

Hey Kyle, I can help out and take the lead or co-lead if someone else wants to join me(@SAS?) I'm going for sure; just not sure which day I will headed down. Your are in our thoughts and prayers. Keep us posted if you need anything.

Guys - I'm planning to drive down to the campsite on the 24th following the 4th ID change of command. I can only stay until Friday afternoon though. Then I have to meet my wife up in Breck.

@twbland Yes I am going, and will co-lead for our group pending Kyle's decision. @Stokes showed me where Kyle likes to camp, at least the general vicinity. @PWCO70crusier , do you have a grid coordinate for the "special site" just in case you don't make it?

Oh, by the way, @Stokes and I were there last week to map trails for trailsoffroad.com. We got Black Bear, Imogene, Yankee Boy, Governor Basin (snow blocked at the top), Corkscrew, California, and Hurricane. JD, a fellow contributor from Castle Rock, got Engineer and Cinnamon (Alpine Loop).

I did get some encouraging news from the radiation specialist yesterday. He said I should be back to driving about a week after my last treatment on Monday. He said I might give it 2 weeks, just so all the swelling can go down. BUT, the San Juan Trip is further out than that. I may be wheeling the Xterra for comforts sake, though. I should be a good 2+ weeks into my immune therapy as well, so hopefully no ill effects from that as well (doctor seemed to think there won't be). Fingers crossed!! @SAS I'll get some coordinates for the campground.
