Didn't want to start a new thread for this trip, and this seems like the logical place to post these pics.
@NELA Mongoose and
@gxgonz feel free to add to the picture dump.
Spent 2 days north and east of Oark this past weekend, had a great time. Trey and I took our daughters, first camping trip for both, and learned a lot about the differences in camping with and without kids. Ryan, his brother Wes, and cousin Chay rounded out the group. 3 100 series trucks, one basically stock. Great trip. Really quick summary:
First day we got in late, and couldn't make our target camping spot (top of a hill with a chimney from an old house site), so made our own spot on the way up. While airing down on the way up got some great closeups of a baby squirrel that was chilling on the side of the road. We setup camp in the dark, and Ryan/Wes proceeded to cook a solid meal (pork loin sliced up and served on tortillas). Was a long day, so we all turned in pretty early.
Second day was some driving in familiar territory, as we made our way up to the chimney camp spot, then back down into Oark for lunch. From there we got back offroad and visited a couple cool spots, then made our way north to night 2 camp spot, which was alongside a creek. Steaks were on the menu, as well as LSU football and Ole Miss football (there was nothing else on) via satellite radio. Two different 100s rolled by this campsite, one stopped to chat the other one didn't. 2nd guy will be at SCC, from Little Rock.
Last morning, Ryan, Wes and Chay had to bolt early, so Trey and I rolled out on our own to try a few trails that i had on GPS but had never done. We got into some pretty hairy stuff, and it wound up taking us about 3 hours to go 7 miles. It was worth it though, and wound up being the best trail on the trip. The halfway point was a good water crossing, and we stopped there for lunch. Kids loved it. From there we found pavement and headed home. Long but really good weekend.
Few things I learned this time:
1. The roof top tent is the sh*t. Easy up/down and your bed is already made. Very little impact on feel while driving. I'm sold. Those LED inflatable lights are also really cool.
2. The trail slows way down with kids.
3. Those zero gravity jump packs that are popular now are really cool. Gotta have one.
4. Always take a chainsaw when "overlanding" in Arkansas. 100% necessary.
