I’ve owned a handful of Land Cruisers, GXs, 4Runners, and a few European vehicles over the years but never a truck and specifically never a Tundra.

When I started looking for one, I knew I wanted an early 2nd-gen Tundra and was only interested in the CrewMax variant. Coming from SUVs, I valued the extra cab space more than bed length. My thinking was if I’ve made it this long without a truck bed, I’ll be fine with the shorter one. Plus, the CrewMax makes life a lot easier with rear-facing car seats.

After selling my 2011 BMW M3, I officially started the hunt.

I ended up finding this:
2010 Toyota Tundra
220k miles
Crappy lift
Ugly headlights
(Definitely needed some love)

Within 5 minutes of getting home, headlights were swapped for a clear set to get rid of the smoked headlights.

Small shakedown up a dirt road close to my house.

The next step in getting this truck to drive better and handle more comfortably was ditching the front lift setup. The previous owner had installed a Rancho adjustable strut paired with a 3-inch spacer, which left the truck with almost no down travel and a terrible ride quality.

I decided to swap everything out for a set of Bilstein 5100 front struts and rear shocks just to get it riding right for the time being.

I was able to find a set of OEM TRD Rock Warriors and ordered up a set of 37x12.50x17 Kenda Klever RTs.

I was replacing a set of 35x12.50x18s that came on the truck that had a low offset and rubbed at lock.

I was able to take the truck on some summer vacations and towed a small travel trailer up to 8500 ft+ elevation on some of the climbs, and the truck did great. As well as some other trips down to Bryce Canyon.

I also recently just had some White Knuckle off-road sliders arrive and stripped the black paint that the previous owner painted on the rock rings.

I left the stripper on the rings for around 14 hours, and the paint pulled right off without any fuss.
