Alright. Mine’s dead. Touch screen inop. and now it’s cracked pretty badly. It’s the factory unit. Literally all that’s broken (literally, now) is the screen itself. All a/c, radio, backup cam, etc. functions are working like normal.

So, buy replacement screen for $50-$100? Or, replace with $850+ aftermarket unit that is incompatible with backup cam? Or, locate a cheaper OE/factory unit from a salvage yard or online/fb market seller for under $850? The ladder would cause less headache on install (basically plug and play); I had zero qualms with factory unit. I’m easy going and don’t require fancy infotainment but maybe an upgrade would be worthwhile. Not an overlander, offroader, etc. It’s my daily. She goes anywhere and everywhere.

Any advice or comment welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Replacements screens are OEM? And $50-$100? And easy to install? I'd go that route.

Not sure if screens are OE but they are out there. Hard to tell if they’re exact fits. Curious if anyone has done this before. Nothing in this realm of repair is easy, in my opinion. I’m better at repairs around motors and axels than electronics and wires.

CAN Bus electronics scare me, so anything aftermarket would need to be vetted IMO. OEM is the safest way to go. And I hear you, "infotainment" is the weak link in modern cars.

Here's a factory unit that has a "yellowish screen" but if it works it's leaps and bounds better than what I currently have. $299 with free shipping is about the best I've seen lately.

Then you have things like this monstrosity. Anyone with experience with this unit or one like it? Would be nice to upgrade but at what potential-new-headache is it really worth, yah know?

I've had 2 of the "tesla-styles" in my 470. The first one was a little buggy but fine, but the screen randomly crapped out on it. So I got another one and it was total junk. The boot time was so slow that I rarely used my backup camera. I could not see most of the screen when wearing polarized sunglasses either. I ended up getting rid of that one, non-nav converting my 470, and getting a Joying unit which only runs sound (and has been great). I'm fine with a Chinese head unit for sound, but not when they also need to run HVAC controls.

You could try one of these which is at least sold from a US-based company. I have not used one, for the record, but would give it a shot if I had a 460.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Always love the comradery on 'mud. Good note on polarized sunglasses, that's a keen observation.

And, don't get me wrong, that Hamilton unit has caught my eye once or twice over the years and I've never heard anything bad about it... but, they're steep!

Check this out

At 300k miles, I'd go w/ the first ebay unit and learn to live w/ the yellow screen.

The bigger question is: How long do you plan on keeping this vehicle? Of course if it's only a year or two more, then go cheap. If it's a "keeper", then spend the extra and do it right, with what you want.
That would be my starting point, how long will I keep it. Everything else revolves around that.

Only 150k. It'll be around until my 2-year-old turns 16, hopefully. Probably order the yellowish factory unit from ebay and take my chances.

Keeping it another 14+ years, my vote would be to spend the extra coin and get quality and what you want/fits your needs. 👍

Daggummit! I knew coming here would push me over the edge to buy something nice. Whenever I get the Hamilton unit I'll be sure to post up a review. lol

A nice infotainment system is worth the coin. Make the rig much nicer and safer to drive.

You're right. And it'll give me an excuse to buy something nice for myself.... cause I need excuses, being married and all...
Hey! Fathers day is in 6 days. If you can't leverage that as a reason to get it, then I don't know what will!!

Probably won't risk the argument and instead will order and request forgiveness if/when the better half notices.
