So I scheduled an appt to have my 2005 LC checked to get a baseline after driving it from Denver. 2 days before my appt. The car would not start. It did crank but could not turn over. AAA stopped by and said it could be a fuel pump issue because the battery is brand new. After getting it towed to a mechanic shop, I am now being told the battery is no good and that there is a parasitic draw. Now my alarms are going off in my head because it feels like im being taken advantage of. Went from what I thought was an easy fix to $800 and all they got done so far was replacing the battery. I had a problem with the key fob as well so they asked me for the spare key and said that could be the problem.....when they used the spare key, it started. Which just does not make sense to me because its not a push to start car... but I know nothing about cars so what do I know...

I do have a link to everything else that was discovered which I will be fixing. And can send to anyone.

Another red flag to me was them saying they touched the front drive axle boots and it completely fell apart. I dont know much about these, but I just drove it 16 hours and it was fine, now it just fell apart?

but should I just pay the shop for what they did so far and take it to Toyota or get a second opinion? Here are screenshots of the findings... also just to make it clear, its not the findings i'm having a hard time with, its the costs that just keep getting piled on. And now I am without a vehicle for another week. I am looking for a level headed answer. If it looks about right for whats going on then I have no problem paying someone for the work. I just want this car to have a good baseline.

If the battery was brand new and failed, then return it for warranty. As for the no start, one key starting it and the other not, it has nothing to do with push to start, it's likely the immobilizer/security system, there's several threads on that system you can review and diagnosis what may be at issue. For the CV, you can get under the truck and inspect them yourself to see if they're torn. Driving it home doesn't mean they weren't torn when you did.

Yes they did mention an immobilizer. I appreciate the feedback. Its what I needed to hear.

If the CV boots are torn, I believe that Toyota sells a re-boot kit. Don’t let your shop tell you that you need to replace the entire CV axle.

Post a picture of the engine bay and battery. Curious to see if the previous owner added any electrical accessories. As mentioned above, if the selling dealer put in a Toyota battery, get it replaced under warranty.

In your other post, you mentioned the windshield is cracked and the sunroof is not working, I would just make sure you don’t have any water leaking inside or getting the wires wet and causing an electrical draw. Check the sunroof drains.

Also, if you’re mechanically inclined, doing the work yourself will save you tons of money. If not, get ready to spend some money to keep it on the road.

This low mileage truck will still need some TLC as you are discovering.

Make sure you find a good shop to replace your windshield.
