2001 Transmission ?

Test drove this new to me 2001 Landcruiser and transmission felt weird. Not sure how to describe. Slow to shift I guess.
Pulled the pan to do filter/fluid exchange and saw what looks to my untrained eye as something missing.

If you didn't find a matching part lying in the pan, I would move on and just change the fluid. It's doubtful the last guy removed a random solenoid bit, and put it back together that way.

This is from my 2000 LX470 rebuild a couple of years ago. I remarked to my son, as we were reassembling his front seat after a teardown, it's always the photo you don't take that will be the one you need. Anyway, although it's not from the same angle, there's nothing there in my valve body either.

If it had been a concern, I would have taken a picture, for sure. This valve body is used for a number of variants, so it's not unusual that some areas aren't used. Split the halves and you'll see there are a number of check ball locations that aren't used either.
