Has anyone done this? How much of a PITA are the spacers and tone ring to get on and off? Should I just bring the axles somewhere to have them removed and installed? Thanks

I took mine to the dealer and had a buddy do it. It's quite complicated, requiring a lot of spacers and sleeves to push the various bearings, tone rings, and stop rings into place. I'm glad I farmed this out, because even if I had a press, I doubt I could have gotten it right.

My buddy cut 95% through the tone ring and stop ring to get them off. It costs more in parts, but it saves some agony at the press. I think I paid $175 in parts for the bearing, seal, and other bits for one side, several years back.

I am going through this currently on my 2006 Tundra w ABS. I took axle out and dropped it off at a buddys. He has 28 years at Toyota and has the sts gear. took it apart and the bearing had spun on the shaft thus a new axle was in my future. Much easier to let the pros who have the equipment tackle this plus the relucter ring has to be measured and put back exact or there will be problems.

Course back in June I was up in Montana and the Right rear went out and it had to be towed to shop thus big bucks for repair.
Sounds like a common problem now days.

The bearing retainer and abs sensor wheel are described as non reusable parts on the above page.

I couldn't get the one I was working on off, had to cut it.

If you measure carefully when you pull the axle out, it's pretty straight forward to get it back on in the correct place. It is extremely important to be very precise in your measurements, as described in the above post.

I did this job with my 12 ton press but I made my own sst by chopping the end off an old axlehousing and then welded ears to it. I cut the spacers and tone ring off. With the tool it's not a horrible job but you have to pay attention to how far you press the parts onto the axle because the seal rides on the spacer and not the axleshaft. I had to do it twice....

Got mine going as well no leaks. Bent one seal before I had received the HF seal installer kit. Once it arrived it was smooth sailing getting the seal into place.

Part of my issue was that some hack beat the crap out of the axle seal. I guess the good thing is that on the non leaking side the bearing was starting to get loose. 500 miles now and no leaks too!!
