Well at 205k it seems the starter has left the chat. Push the button and just click. Started as a random no start / click then hit the button again and it started. Random until now. Now all I get is the click. How big of a PITA is this going to be to swap out? One video said you had to pull the exhaust Manifold ( definitely don’t want to do that ) but others show getting it out through the wheel well. And of course it’s a week out from GSMTR.

Not the starter relay / replaced
Battery is new and fully charged.
Could be the solenoid? Maybe.

Suggestions?

Thanks for sharing!
Why is everything so tight and difficult?
Good luck with the repair!

It's a booger for sure. I did it without pulling the manifold but the cats have to be disonnected and the heat shields were surprisingly difficult. Go ahead and have a replacement solenoid connector because it will likely be brittle and snap when removed.

Like @Bryanseye said, we’ve been able to do them at the shop by leaving the manifold and pulling the cats, but it’s not a fun job. Go ahead and start spraying everything with penetrating oil ahead of time. If you end up having to pull the manifold it turns into a huge headache if a stud breaks off.

Getting back after this in a few. Got everything loose but can’t get the connector unplugged. Also having issues actually getting the starter to come out of the bell housing. I was exhausted by the time I got that far and called it quits about 1 am. I think the wiring is in the way. It looks like it has a plastic piece holding it that needs to be disconnected to move the wires out of the way. Ive seen videos of people doing the job on jack stands. Holy hell. It’s hard enough to get to everything on the lift.

Are you taking cats off to get the starter out? Several of the videos I’ve seen show taking the nut on the motor mount loose and jacking g up the engine to squeeze the starter out.

Absolutely not taking the manifold off. Not opening Pandora’s box lol. Worst case scenario I’ll borrow David’s excursion to pull the 40 to GSMTR and I’ll let it sit until he can come down and help me. This is job is challenging to say the least.

Picked these up while O’reily’s to help teach those randomly placed 10mm you can’t get to

You are going to have to take the cats off. The actual FSM says to remove the manifold too, but you can usually skip that part. I’ve never heard of anyone having to lift the engine.

I was able to get it out without dismantling any of the exhaust. Except the heat shields. Took the 19mm nut off the motor mount. Jacked it up 1-2 inches and it came out over the farm just behind the brake line.

Good call on the connector Bryan. Broke right off. Luckily O’reily’s had it in stock also. Would normally have gotten an OEM started but the dealers near me only had remands and I’m trying to get this back together to take to GSMTR. Don’t have time to order one.

Got the starter bolted in and electrical hooked up. Starts right up. (Thank you 6lb 8oz baby Jesus!)

Called it a day. Going to see Driving and Crying tonight.

Will reinstall slightly mutilated heat shields, dip stick, and splash guards in the morning.

it sure who thought was a good ideas to have one bolt from the outside and one from inside. Not sure how anyone would do this without a lift. If you have.. hats off to you that bolt was a pain

Definitely not engineered for the end user! Did mine it a dirt parking lot and it took 3 days of available time and lots of profanity. Too bad mine didn’t fire up because it was the dropped valve that happened during shutdown.

Good you got it back on the road.
