I'm looking into 2nd gen 4runners and lately it's been hard to run into the perfect candidate or close to my low budget, my first question is it possible to swap a 5 speed from an auto trans. ? the reason i'm asking this is there are a few times that i found a good rig that fits my liking but it is an auto trans. and if i find a 5 speed rig there is way more work needed than i could afford to fix it. my follow up question is if the swap is possible do i need to replace the ECU or engine harness, what is involve in this swap if can be done i'm in no rush to get this thing started but i would like to be informed if i make that leap of faith and buy an automatic.my cruiser still is an on going money pit so budget is split if this happens. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.:D

:flipoff2: Duhhhh..it isn't like you don't know someone who has done the swap themselves. Visit me this Saturday or Sunday? I have to babysit the little one while wifey's working.

We can chat then. :D I kept the auto ECU and tricked it so it even kept cruise control by pulling the auto control box out from just below the shifter itself and splicing two wires (*has to be electronic cruise though). Remember, it started out life as a 2wd auto and what it is now. The wiring's easy, it's the cutout for the floor to accommodate the manual trans, swapping in the pedal assembly after drilling out for the clutch master, and routing the clutch line across the firewall that took the most time. I can even show you how to make it into a manual hub setup.

I can't find your # right now, you should still have ours. Call ahead and come on out if time permits or wait a couple of weeks when other stuff won't interfere with my freetime. My consulting and tech fee involves lumpia. ;)

Oh thanks Shane for reminding me,pardon my short term memory loss.sure that would be nice but i'm tied up with side work this weekend to feed my cruiser addiction LOL.

So what is involved to perform a clean swap and estimated cost? i would still rather buy something that has a 5 speed in it to lessen possible headache LOL.i'm in no rush i have a lot of patience when it comes to waiting for the right project, hey it took me 2 years to find my cruiser ha ha.

Shane i'm sure your looking forward to see some lumpia when i come by huh.i could bring you some on the upcoming swap meet in Stockton just give me a heads up how much you want.

I got a 5 speed to swap into my 1st gen once the slush box gives out, I got the trans for about $100 bucks out of a wreck I was pulling the engine out of too. I'd say the expense is going to be more in the peripherals. You could get the pedal assembly out of the same truck you get the trans from. Same could go for the clutch hard lines. I'd buy a new master and slave cylinder as well as a new clutch, flywheel, etc. You will also need the shifter boots and floor plates to match the new floor cutout. I would suspect all of that stuff would run you $500 or so, plus the trans itself, so I would suspect that you would be into it for $700 or so if you got a good deal on the trans.

For a clean swap, I would also say try and get the ECU and harness from the 5 speed truck. I know you can make the ECU work, as NorCalBorn said, but if you can score the ECU for the 5speed that might make it a little easier. I think the cross members may be different, I am not 100% sure on that one though.

You will also need the matching t-case or plan on swapping on an adapter plate and a gear drive t-case. I am pretty sure that the auto t-cases are not compatible with the 5speed tail housings. My 88 has some added fluid lines and other misc stuff that all will have to come out when/ if I do the swap.
