Another option would be to swap out your H42 transmission for an H41; the H41 has a 5.30:1 1st gear. The H41 was a foreign market offering, so not super common here, but Spector Off Road imports them (that's where I bought mine).

The H55 has a 4.84:1 1st gear, and an overdrive 5th, but you'd have to use the later split transfer case, and lose your parking brake. The H41 is a bolt-in replacement for the H42 and uses your current transfer case.

The four speed with 5.3:1 was in the early four speed that was replaced 9/73 with a 4.99:1 first gear H41. Those were never imported to the US. Haynes manual refers early four speed as for the F engine. Besides problem finding one replacement parts would be even harder.

8/80 the H41 changed with split transfer case. 10/82 when the H55F started it shared the same gearing as the H41. For the H55F I have from a BJ42 I sourced a H41 input shaft to convert to an F engine .

I plan to stick with my H42 and one piece Tcase, and really the 4.11 diffs seems like the way to go. I'm not a huge fan of the traditional 'granny low' four speeds as they become essentially a 3 speed in road use. While the truck I'm discussing is a real oddball in LC territory, I am about to do something perhaps even more strange with an '84 H42 and split case that I've been tripping over for 25 years, into a '59 F350. Is nothing sacred?

I think it's hilarious that folks are recommending an h55 5 speed trans to somebody who drives the coolest FJ55 on the planet that is on a 56 square mile island.

My original 4-speed and transfer case were fine with the 4:11 gears but it was built when the national speed limit was 55 and then it was revving high on the highway.

With the H55F, and split transfer case with 3:1 low range and 4:11 gears I have a much better mix of ratios. The highest speed limit in Wyoming is now 80 and will be tuning much less rpm then with the 4 speed and have lower gears with 1st and low rang.

It is your money use what ever transmission and transfer case you want.

If I had a FJ55 I would have done the R2.8 and H55F/split transfer case for the same reasons I put them in my FJ40. I would have also done the FJ60 full floating conversion on the rear with the big brake kit on the front. It is our money we can do what we want.

Perhaps the finest compliment I have ever been payed. Thank you Mr. Ugo:)

And for you Mr. Agie... Not sure how many here remember Eric Burden and the Animals, but here they are singing 'It's my Life and I'll do what I want'. Not very socially correct in 2026 ......

Ugo? It reminds me of a crappy car back in the day. I might have to change my tag.:) I picked it in a panic. Every other name I tried was taken.

The fit and finish of your 55 is just cool. I have an old 76 3/4 ton 4x4 chev that's rusted away. You've inspired me to try and find an old body to drop on it. Maybe someday.

Sorry, pb4ugo And I just now understand what it means as a sentence. Did a lot of road trips with 4 kids and a wife!
