1st Car Payment in 12 years

Pick this 06' up last week for the DD. Little high on the mileage (87K) but super clean and the CarFax (For what it's worth) shows it to be a SoCal rig that had be routinely serviced by the Toyota dealer to include the Timing Belt @ 80K.

First impressions is this thing is nothing like the 80 we've been driving for 15years. Love the V8...not so good on the gas mileage. Comfort is off the chart and the truck has a lot of features that need to be learned, AHC, A-Trac etc. Picked up the service manuals off EBay recently and did my first oil change (Mobil1 5w/30). Hate to say it but couldn't figure out where the oil filter was at first Been spending a lot of time on MUD to learn what issues go with the 100 series.

Looking good! Is the oil filter behind the front driver tire? Thats were it is on the 4 runner I have.

Once a toyota guy its hard to buy anything else.

The big concerns:

2003+ 100-Series/LX470: Navigation unit (controls HVAC too); up to $4k replacement cost; rebuilt units starting to show up under $1000.

'06-'07 MY have exhaust air injectors for warm up emission control; up to $4k when they go south.

AHC works great until it breaks...then it can be expensive to fix.

And like all 100's try to avoid shock loading the front diff...

One issue that will need to be addressed is tires. Currently the tires are 275 65 18, and was reading Rusty_tlc thread on the Michelin tires as an option but moving to a 285?

Oh yeah...the sweet spot for the 2UZ-FE is 2,000rpms. Hold your highway speed to that and you should easily and consistently see 18mpg with stock size and tread type.

Mileage right now is like 10mpg, but we've been driving just around town and can't keep the foot out of it. Way more power then the six cylinder in the 80. Not to fond of the Nav system that controls...EVERYTHING. Took me 20 minutes to figure out how to manually operate the fan. ( Doesn't say much for my intuitiveness) GPS is...O.K. Since it's my wife's go to work rig it won't see much off road use. In reading the mud forum on these they really are very capable rigs.

I spent a a fair amount of time reading up on Spressomon's rig. SWEET!

When I bought it the Jack was missing so not sure what to do about that. Had to order a second key/remote $$$OMG Cdan's price was WAY better then the local dealer pricing. Also ordered the older style oil filter from Dan and this from Slee.

I think the newer 100-Series use the same style key(s) as my '99. If so then you will eventually discover the OEM key fob is lacking for durability. You can buy the blanks on eBay but they tend to grenade like the OEM...just cheaper.

What I've done: Cut the metal key portion off the remote key so you're left with just the electronic guts. Slip that onto a key ring and then program a new Camry key (less than $40), from CDan or Onur (both great guys but I Onur has more 100-Series parts experience), for near bullet proof construction for starting duties.


IMO the Toyota OEM jacks are one of the best compact jacks made. I bought a couple extra from the auto parts guy at the south end of the airport. They're not too difficult to find even with the OEM handle and extensions...

Congrats Keith. Nice job on the no car payment for so long. I haven't had a car payment since '06 and it feels great. I doubt I'll go another six years, but a guy can hope. I had big plans for ours until Jess drove it and immediately proclaimed it was "Hers."

Was it a local rig? We have 285/75's on and they do a good job of filling the wheel wells. X2 on Spresso's key fob. I did the same thing after talking to Dan.

Truck came out of Ontario California dealership that was at one time or is now John Elway, but I purchased it from a dealer in Roseville. I'd been looking for about a year. They had two an 06' & 07' that were identical ( Color, interior close mileage) except for the AHC in the 06'. The 07' came out of Arkansas and was a little rusty and appeared to be a little rougher.

Congrats!!! prepare to enter a whole new world of off road travel.

FWIW the OEM jack from my 1975 FJ40 is virtually identical to the ones in my 1984 LC and my 1998 LC. if something works don't %&()_ with it.

The keys do suck, even after the fix the buttons wear out, the only button that works on either one of mine is the panic. Once I get around to getting a new master key and get it programmed I'll try to replace the switches on one of mine. Kind of a PITA if you screw up both master keys because you have to buy a whole new ECU $$$$$$.


MPG; The best I ever did was 19 driving a consistent 65MPH on I-15, Spresso nailed it: keep the RPMs <2K and the speed under 65 for the best MPG.

The 80 will become the family camping/everything else truck. I ordered sliders from Metal tech this past week, so I'm looking forward to installing those and then onto a winch bumper at some point.
