First post so be gentle with me. For some reason I am surrounded by family that between them own five Landcruisers of varying models. To join the club my daughter got herself a 1992 70 series with the 1PZ engine in it. We drove it the length of the south island of New Zealand when she bought it and only have one major gripe, it does not like long hills on the open road.

Does anyone have any tips on where we might find a turbo for the 1PZ engine, and ideally a manifold? Can't seem to find anything in NZ or Australia so now looking wider afield. I know we can bodge a smaller capacity petrol engine turbo but looking for something that is known to work.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

You can think of the 1PZ engine as a 1HZ minus one cylinder.

This engine is reliable and has good low rpm power. However, it does not have enough power for hills and things of that nature.

I remember reading one or two threads here in 'Mud about adding a turbo to the 1PZ. Try searching them. The search function is your friend. Otherwise, search 'Mud using Bing or Google.

Given the similarity between the 1PZ and the 1HZ, a low-pressure turbo for the latter might be a good application for the former. Parts for the 1PZ are becoming scarce, but it is always possible to use 1HZ parts.

Keep in mind that a turbo means extra heat, and engines such as the 1PZ do not like additional heat. Proper tuning is important. So is watching your right foot.

Last but not least, you may want to add an intercooler for better results.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Juan. Yes, have tried the search function. Just trying to track down a supplier or a 2nd hand unit. We turboed the 1HZ and that goes ok.

1hz turbo adapter should fit a 1pz also. oil fittings are also the same.

or take a 1hdt manifold chop off one of the cyls and then weld it shut on that end.
I was scrolling to the bottom to recommend Simpson offroad for a manifold adapter but Buss beat me to it. Mitch Simpson is a stand up dude in my experience.

A ct26 paired with his adapter would get you going but I'd advise getting everything else sorted first. Have it running absolutely perfectly n/a... And the advisory above about heat: Possibly the most important thing to watch.

Do you have an EGT gauge already?

No EGT gauge as of yet. Looks like a shopping trip across the ditch might be in order.
