G'day all

Currently have a 1986 RJ70 still with the old 22R, which I have been looking at parts to eventually do an engine conversion on. A 1PZ engine with a R151 attached came up for sale close by out of a PZJ70.

Does anyone know weather the gearbox is the same as the LJ70 box, and able to be bolted in to my RJ70?

Also will the 1PZ even fit in the engine bay? Granted new engine mounts will need to be fabricated up I'm guessing, but is it a viable option to squeeze in?

Picture of my 70, just because

Cheers for any information.

Yeah I was aware of the 1hz not fitting that is why I was hoping that the pz might fit, I had a quick look online trying to find measurements but no luck, might have to go measure it up in person.

Cheers

1PZ has about 4.5" clearance more to the firewall than a 1HZ. If I remember correctly the firewall itself is actually not going to work without serious modification. A 1KZT would be a much easier swap but expensive. I know there aren't many 2L or 3L's left down there but those basically bolt right up. Maybe ring some wreckers with lots of Hilux's?

My guess is that the LJ70 came with an R150f, but I believe that it is very similar to a R151f so that shouldn't be a problem. I am curious why the firewall would be an issue with a 1PZ? I was under the impression that the LJ firewall was basically the same as a HZJ firewall, and that it was just the sheet metal in front that was different.

The issue I have with converting my the RJ70 to a diesel is the gearbox, the LJ70 gearboxes are highly sought after and rare to come across, my plan has been to do a 3RZ conversion using my G52 box and call it a day.

However seeing this complete 1Pz with box looks like it would be a nice swap, though finding out if it is even a viable swap is the hard part.

Look for some of Crushers old posts, he did a few conversions on these. I think the gearbox on the RJ70 is the G52.
Personally, I would be looking for a 1KZ T or TE out of a Prado.
Probably more power and the old PZ is not easy to get parts for if its unique to the 5cyl block.

Have you considered turbocharging the 22R? We had a factory 22RTE in the trucks and 4Runners over here, it was less than ideal as supplied by Toyota, but with a little work, they are a blast.

I did consider it, however I figured from the work and price of making the 22r work, I could just go a 3rz for similar outlay.
The 1pz I seen came with a gearbox that's why I was curious if it could fit, but by the sounds of it might be to difficult and will stick to my original plan.

Hello,

x2.

You will have to either get a Heavy Duty 70 Series front clip or extend the frame rails to make the 1PZ engine fit.

I would also look for a 1KZ engine. Or a 1KD.

The manual says the gearbox is the G52.

Could a 5VZ-FE V6 engine be an option?
