Hey all.. I'm helping a buddy today and was hoping you guys might be able to help.

we replaced the water pump and timing belt and installed the timing belt per the instructions.. the timing is set like this image How I can get the timing marks on Mazda Protege 1.6 1999? (Mazda Protege Engine)

now the car wont start and it backfires out of the air filter.

we only installed the alternator belt, the valve cover and spark plugs.. we havent put on the power steering belt or any of the timing covers because we want to make sure it starts first

I hate to say this but you may need to button it all back together. Are all of the intake hoses connected? Modern EFI can be finicky. EIther that or your timing is off.

Timming is off. Remove timming belt and try again. It sounds like one of the 2 cams is 180* out.

 i had the crankshaft position sensor gear on backwards and i finally set the sensor the correct gap using 2 sheets of cardstock paper to get the correct gap

thanks guys!!!

Timing was correct
