just pulling a head off 1FZ-FE 80 SERIES 1997 mdl and on the injection side cam have noticed a spare cam lobe next to the can lobe on the head it a plate
could this be for a manual fuel pump on the carb motors

Assuming the newer variations with coil packs are direct injection?

Actually yes, they were.

For certain markets, 1998 and later 1FZ-FE's became direct ignition losing the distributor and gaining coil packs.

When losing the distributor it also gained a true cam position sensor on the head.

Direct injection or direct ignition? Which is it?

Chris said direct injection. That be fuel-related.

Yer such a mind-reader........

Beyond the power steering reservoir, a few HP, and the debatable improvement of coil packs versus dizzy, I don't see enough benefit to warrant searching for a "newer" 1FZ....not that anyone but myself was questioning.

On the quest for knowledge, having spent considerable time in Australia, New Zealand, and the English speaking Middle East, the 1FZ is one bad mo fo.

Yes ,it had a good reputation. A lot of people here were disappointed with the V8 that replaced it as only had 10% more power and used more fuel.

I have to admit, the 2UZ-FE was the best Toyota engine I've ever owned.....in the platform it was in, but it weighed 1K less, was AWD, IFS.

Committed to the 1FZ for this endeavor.....financially, at this point.

Trying to determine how possible to source a non-US tranny, TC and ECU for a swap, or dumb down a US ECU for easier auto/part time swaps.

I'm stoopid in this department, along with many others, but determined.

As much as im a fan of the 1fz from personal experience the 2uz was noticably better on fuel between a 97fzj80 auto and 2003uzj auto.

The intake manifold is also different. They run a map sensor instead of a maf

I dont have any personal experience but I have a friend who has 2UZ in his 100 series and he just about needs a sedative when he talks about the fuel bill towing a 24ft boat to Shark Bay and back.

Towing a 24ft boat I can understand bulk fuel usage.
(The lady at the service station in sharkbay almost had a heart attack when I put 80 litres of petrol in my 79 series thinking it was a diesel.)

I could not figure which part was responsible for the 240 Hp vs 212 Hp? i know that sequential injection revised piston, coils vs dizy but still impressive 28 hp gain over our engine
