Hey fellas. I’m in need of some guidance with my alternator swap. I’ve read some threads and watched videos. I just need a little clarification on the lock bolt and the adjusting bolt. Does the adjusting bolt need to be removed completely? I can see that the lock bolt attaches to alternator. I’m assuming the lock bolt will need to come out completely in order to remove alternator. Eventually the pivot bolt will need to come out.

Is there an order as to which bolts are loosen first, second, and third? Adjusting, lock, or pivot?
Does order matter? Or is it just a matter of loosening all so the belts become loose.

Point me to a best vid or thread if you may.

Thanks fellas.

Thanks for the fast reply. In no particular order? This will loosen belts? Do I have to mess with adjusting bolt?

In the past 24 hrs. I've had 3 alternators in and out of my 80. Here's a quick run down on what to do. I'm not saying this is the best way but what worked for me.

Remove the battery and battery tray.
Disconnect the wiring on the alternator and the other wire on that harness.
Remove the pivot bolt.
Remove the lock bolt.
Leave the adjusting bolt and block connected, but to reinstall the belts fully loosen the adjusting bolt.
Wiggle the alternator free and bring it forward and turn it 90 degrees with the pulley toward the driver side.
Removal is tight but the alternator can be pulled under the large radiator hose. Lift it out.

When you reinstall loosen the adjuster bolt completely but still attached to the block. This is so you can get the belts over the pulley..

Battery tray was out already. Ps reservoir and some electrical wires out of the way with a few rotations and inversions of the alternator and it’s out. Now to remove and install new brushes. Put it all back and see what happens. Thanks Crabcake for the link. Thanks Godwin for the reinstall tip. Will do.

It has been a while since I’ve had to wrench on the 80.

Thanks Mud community.
