My father in law just dropped off a 1994 single cab 4x4 22r egine truck in my driveway. truck has been sitting for over a year and ran fine before parked. Gas of couse smells bad, I checked and replaced usual electricals and am getting spark. What to do next I'm not that familiar with the 22r What is the best way to check and see if I am getting fuel to the rails? Truck will turn over but won't catch to start. I pulled a plug after several cranks and don't smell any fuel and plugs are dry so I assume not getting fuel can you prime these trucks ? I plan on replacing fuel filter tomorrow. Also I have the air filter tube removed from manifold, will it crank without it? I have sprayed stater fluid behind butterfly in manifold still no start Is this the best place to spray? again this engine is all new to me
thanks

The fuel pump will not turn on till the maf sensor moves from either vacuum from cranking or if u override it machanically. As for checking for fuel. Just crack a line after cranking with the intake hooked up. Easiest place is at the cold start injector on the intake

Actually, the MAF switch is bypassed by the ignition switch when it's in the START position, so cranking the engine will make the fuel pump run. But it won't keep running (assuming it starts) once you go to ON position.

I wouldn't do that, it will make a mess all over the engine. All you need to do is take a paper clip, bend it into a U, and jumper across the Fp and +B pins in the Diagnostic connector under the hood by the fusebox. Then turn the key to ON (not start). This forces the fuel pump to run. Go to the front of the truck and listen, you should hear fuel hissing through the fuel rail, and if you go back by the tank you should hear a slight hum of the pump running. If not, then you have an electrical problem or a dead fuel pump.

But, you gotta get that old fuel out first. You said you are gonna replace the fuel filter, so what you could do is go to the hardware store and get a hunk of hose, about 3/4"-1" ID. Take the fuel filter off, then slip the hose over the supply line fitting that is coming from the tank. Put the other end into an empty gas jug. Then do the paperclip trick, let the fuel pump empty the tank. You don't need to get it all, but you do need to get as much as possible. Dump in some fresh gas (you're gonna need a lot of gas jugs).

Have you checked the ECU for any codes?

no fuel

Well i jumped fp to b+ still no start so I unhooked fuel filter and definitely no fuel coming out of line from tank. Jusat drip. Is there anyting else to check before I have to drop tank and put in fuel pump? could circuit be broken to fuel pump? I really don't want to drop tank but...

If u have a couple of guys (and no camper or tool box). Lifting the bed off is Easier than dropping the tank in my ex. ESP. If the pump wont let ya pump out and the drain is damaged. That pump does not fail very often. But testing the circuit at the pump connector will let ya know. I've only replaced 1 in the last 10 years and I work on a lot of pickups.

There could be a wiring issue, there is a plug under the passenger seat that you can direct wire the pump from the battery. There's another plug on top of the tank, but it's a huge pain to reach unless you lift up the bed or drop the tank. Emptying the tank can be a challenge depending on how full it is.

its alive sort of

with a new fuel pump and several cranks it starts and runs, It won't really hold an idle? any ideas what to check to smoth out? May just be bad gas burning out?

thx
