The cruise control stalk from the 80 will not work for either method. It functions in a manner that is not compatible with the vortec PCM. I will pick a discreet area to install the switches and wire it up later on.

 Looking forward to this.

another update:

houston, we have a/c hoses...

IMG_0926.jpg

ended up buying a set of vortec hoses just to get the ends for the compressor connection. I then took those along with the old toyota hoses and they married them up.

Maxair in Centennial did the work. They were super fast and Bill was quick to correct a small error in the way the fittings were positioned. great guys to work with. Now I just need to wire the compressor up, change out the receiver/drier, replace some Orings and then take it down to an a/c shop to have the system evacuated and then charged up. I assume that the system should take about the same amount of R134a as before since the only real change is the compressor. I may spring for a reman compressor since it's easy to replace now.

another update: I have been monkeying with the exhaust. While it works great and the sound is good, I get this crazy vibration at idle when the engine is at operating temp. It seems the pipes pick up a resonance and makes them start to vibrate, and this shakes the whole truck. It's better now, but I think I need one more isolator to completely eliminate it. Bosal sells the toyota style isolators and they are easy to fab some mounts up with. I am still using the stock portion of the tail pipe with the stock resonator. This may go away soon.

Fantastic thread! Really appreciate you documenting all this... I too am in Parker and would love to buy you a beer or three and get your input on how to proceed with this crazy endeavor... Thinking an LQ4/LQ9 and a 6L80E would be quite nice. :)

A/C update...

I tried to install the discharge hose and couldn't get it to fit. Ended up taking it back to Maxair and had Bill shorten it a few inches. Now it fits. Both (discharge and suction) hoses are now installed. I have a new receiver/dryer to go in and my vacuum pump and scale should arrive today.

Somehow over the course of an already fully booked weekend, I plan on evacuating the system, testing for leaks, and then charging it up. I still have to run the A/C clutch wire from the Toyota A/C amplifier to the GM compressor (just a matter of matching the wires up with a weatherpak connector) and also run a signal wire to the DC Controller to ramp the fans up when the A/C is on, and to the Vortec PCM so that it compensates the idle speed with the compressor on.

It's been a while for me since I have messed around with automotive A/C systems. I figure what the heck, I did the engine swap... how hard can the A/C really be?

Nice job, your going to love this.

Man I wish someone would come up with the wiring instructions/prints for a 96 cruiser. I would sooo do this as the TRD supercharger is nice but nothing like this. My brother has a LS1 in his 60 and it is a dream to drive. Rivals my hopped up Dodge turbo diesel for sure.

just go for it. I have a 95 and it really wasn't that bad.

The wiring is fairly easy once you understand how it all works. I had to circumvent a bunch of the stuff because I had a craptacular remote start installed by circuit city that goofed up a bunch of my ih1 connections but the GM stuff is all stand alone. There's not a whole lot you have to worry about. The v8 is sick awesome power.

I have an LS1 built perfect for your truck...only if i can have your TURD for my 3.4...: )

Figured it's time for an update.
Been driving the truck as a DD and everything has been great! Great power, averaging about 16 mpg in city driving, and in two weeks I visit the emissions inspector to get the truck inspected for Denver emissions.

I have had some issues come up recently. Right now I am dealing with some long range fuel trim errors. The PCM is trying to compensate for a lean condition at certain rpms and I get an occasional CEL. I suspect it's the mass air meter. The donor engine had one of those oiled air filters on it and those are well known to destroy a MAF. I have a new one on the way - cleaning did not work.

Also, my junk yard Lincoln continental dual cooling fans burned up a fan motor. Oddly, one fan is enough to keep the motor cooled but I have a replacement on the way as well.

I think I have about 8k miles on my swap now.

Great to hear things are going well!!!

Found out something cool with my scan gauge.... I have the xgauge option and discovered that it will display trans fluid temp. how cool is that! Apparently the 4l60e has an internal trans fluid temp sensor.

That is cool! What gauge do you have?

Awesome! I didn't know that... but too late. already drilled a hole for trans temp.

Glad to hear everything is working! I haven't done much of anything other than bend a ghetto peice of threded rod to control by np203. The rest has to be shifted by climbing under the truck. I'll get there eventually.
