A buddy of mine has a 1993 4WD 4-Runner with 131,000 miles and it is starting to show its age.

The power steering pump is leaking like a sieve. I have PMed CruiserDan for pricing of a replacement.

The 3 preformed hoses between the air filter box and the throttle body are worn and cracked (CDan pricing already requested).

He is complaining about a lack of power when going up a gradual slope. At full throttle, he says that it bogs down and will not go past 40 mph. Around town driving, power is adequate.

I know a thing or two about my Land Cruiser, but am at a loss where to start looking on this vehicle. We plan to start with a tune-up (plugs, wires, cap & rotor) after getting the power steering pump problem solved. I have read on another forum about rebuilding the power steering pump. Anyone have a link to some useful information about the rebuild?

Any recommendations or links appreciated.

Thanks,

Riley

I have rebuilt a couple PS pumps from the 22RE, but not one from a 3VZ-E. They can't be much different, the primary difference is the V6 pump has the reservoir mounted directly to the top of the pump. There is a gasket kit available from Toyota, although it typically doesn't include the main bearing, make sure you replace that too. It's not too hard to do, the FSM has a detailed procedure, I believe you'll need a decent pair of snap-ring pliers.

Incidently, most leaks in Toyota PS systems are caused by someone putting PS Fluid in them. They are only supposed to have ATF in them, it's on the cap.

Do a tune-up, check the timing, check the ECU for codes, maybe even check the TPS. If you get adventurous, maybe do a valve adjustment, although be advised it's a giant PITA.

Thanks for the advice! I have told him that if he is serious about doing it himself (with my help) that the first thing he needs to order is the FSM. There is a trusted mechanic across the street that he is taking it to to see what the diagnosis is. I told him that if he and I do dive into the repairs, it would have to be a weekend gig. It is his wife's DD, so I am leaving it up to him.

I just wanted to have some information about the rebuild if he goes that direction.

Thanks again,

Riley

The fluid in the PS pump is a tan/brown color. I believe that is where his problem started. He was very proud about always having the oil changed at 3,000 miles at a quicky lube place and all the fluids topped up. If they put the wrong fluid in, they did not do him any favors.

Thanks again for the info. I will be sure to let him know about the fluid.
