MBOGO2 Build Thread: (MBOGO is Cape Buffalo in Swahili)
*** this had BUILD tag prefix on it when I started, if an admin can add it?

This will take me a few posts to get up to date over the past 7 months.

I have loved Land Cruisers for a long time, and my intro to them was in Africa. I sell hunting and fishing trips around the world, and hunting Africa is my passion, so I have been exposed to a lot of LC’s in Africa, Australia, Asia, New Zealand and Europe over the years. Scheduled to do my 40th Safari in August. I bought a 2025 LC as a daily driver in April of last year, and I modded it a bit to make it functional to hunt out of, but I just hated to beat it up right off the bat as I plan to keep it indefinitely. So, I bought a 1992 FJ80 in November 2025 from a lady in Florida. It was her husband’s project beater. I got it cheap but knew it needed a lot of work inside and out. It was two tone silver/gray with quite a bit of oxidation. The hood had spacers, the front bumper was angled down on both corners, it had a number of leaks, ac was decent but not great, driver seat had a good sized tear, passenger side a small one but all back seats excellent, minimal surface rust on frame, but back bumper crossbar was really rusted at the bolt holes. It had a Prinsu roof rack and Cali Raised lightbar that I liked and would have added anyway, etc. It had hideous wheels and super aggressive tires. It probably wasn’t my smartest buy, but I always wanted an 80, the price was right, and my wife was all for it. She agreed I needed a “beater” to hunt out of, etc.

My son loves to work on vehicles and can do some things, and we planned to do what we could together, and then big stuff, we would have to take to a local 4x4 specialist, and now I have found a 50-year mechanic that specializes in old Toyotas who is just a jewel. I have a 2-3/10 knowledge of the 80, most of that learned from this forum, but am learning.

The main three problems to start with were a bad coolant leak, power steering pump leak and an oil leak. Like I said, probably not my smartest buy. I had a thorough inspection by Commonwealth 4x4, and started prioritizing things. We replaced a ton of hoses and vacuum lines, plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor, I found a back bumper cross bar for sale, cleaned it up and had it welded on, cleaned up some wiring, bought some slightly used Goodyear 285/70/r17’s and steelies to start with.

We put in a new power steering pump, thermostat, fan clutch, added a snorkel, and it was running pretty good. I knew the oil leak was a rear main seal, but it was minor, and I was going to put it off and take care of other things first. Then my son and I went to change diff fluid, and it took a ton to fill it, like it was almost empty. Then the next morning, it had all run out my passenger side knuckle. My axle seal was shot, so I had the front axles, birfs, wheel bearings, etc. all redone, and then changed both diff fluids.

I ran it pretty hard during spring turkey scouting and season and probably put 2500 miles on it in 6 weeks. Things were good minus my oil leak which was getting worse.

After season, I got a coupon for 30% off a cheap Maaco paint job, so I decided to have it redone in NATO green. It’s pretty darn good for the price, but definitely not a super quality paint job.

My oil leak was getting really bad, to the point where it was getting embarrassing on the street in front of the house. I had to have that taken care of, so I just had my guy replace the rear main seal, he discovered a part broken off the torque converter that was going to cause some major trouble, so we replaced with one from Precision of New Hampton. I am going to pick it up in a couple of hours, and will update at that point. but below is where we stand as of now...
Below is a list of things I remember that we have done, in no certain order: I am sure I have forgotten a few things. some random pics
